Late spring through early fall, roughly May to September, is the most reliable window, with warm dry days, cooler evenings, and the campground in full operation. Summer brings the strongest Gorge winds and the busiest weekends, so reservations are recommended well ahead. April and October are quieter shoulder months with cooler temperatures and a chance of rain, but pleasant for sightseeing and wildflower viewing on the eastern Gorge bluffs. The campground typically closes for the winter season, so off-season RV travelers should confirm dates with Oregon State Parks before arrival.

A short walk from the campground leads to viewpoints of the Columbia River and Memaloose Island, a traditional Native American burial site. Interpretive signs explain the cultural and natural history of this stretch of the Gorge.
Tom McCall Preserve sits atop Rowena Crest just west of the park and is famous for its spring wildflower displays and sweeping Gorge views. Trails range from a flat plateau loop to a steeper climb to McCall Point. The signature hairpin viewpoint on the Historic Columbia River Highway has parking but is tight for larger rigs.
This paved, car-free section of the Historic Columbia River Highway is open to walkers and cyclists between Hood River and Mosier. The route passes through restored highway tunnels with classic Gorge views. Trailhead parking accommodates standard vehicles; longer RVs are better left at camp.
About 20 miles west of the park, Hood River is the windsurfing and kiteboarding capital of the Gorge, with a lively waterfront, breweries, and orchards along the Fruit Loop. RV-friendly parking is easier on the outskirts than in the compact downtown core.
Just east of the park, The Dalles offers the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum, plus historic Lewis and Clark sites. The Discovery Center has a large, level parking area suitable for RVs.
The park makes a convenient base for a loop drive south on Highway 35 toward Mount Hood, passing orchards, viewpoints, and trailheads in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Allow a full day to drive the loop and stop at Timberline Lodge.
About 20 miles east, this sister state park offers riverside trails, fishing, and bird watching where the Deschutes meets the Columbia. The trailhead has paved parking that fits most RVs and trailers.
Jesse was always available to assist in anything we needed. We took the RV for a ten day trip to Banff and back and the trip went smoothly. I was most impressed with the turning circle of the Winnebago compared with other RVs we have rented in the past. I would recommend this RV to anybody looking for a comfortable road trip and a smooth experience.

Jesse was super responsive and helpful throughout the whole process and even after drop off. There was an issue with the table (we broke it-oops) and we worked through it with no problems.

Memaloose State Park, OR, United States
The park sits along westbound Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge, about 75 miles east of Portland (roughly a 90-minute drive) and about 11 miles west of The Dalles. Access is from the westbound lanes only at the Memaloose Rest Area, so eastbound RVers should continue to the next exit, cross over, and rejoin I-84 westbound. I-84 through the Gorge is generally RV friendly with no tunnels or steep mountain passes near the park, but expect strong crosswinds, especially for high-profile rigs. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Portland International Airport (PDX).
