Late May through early September is the prime window, when ferry service runs on a full schedule, the marina is fully staffed, and lake temperatures are warm enough for swimming, paddling, and fishing. July and August bring the busiest weekends and Put-in-Bay crowds, so June and early September offer a calmer shoulder-season experience with milder temperatures. October can be scenic for walleye fishing and fall color, but ferry runs taper off and weather turns unpredictable. Winter travel is not practical for visitors because commercial ferries suspend service once ice forms on the lake.

The Lonz Winery ruins are the cultural centerpiece of Middle Bass Island State Park. Visitors can tour the restored exterior, view interpretive signs on Lake Erie winemaking, and enjoy panoramic lake views from the terrace.
The park operates a full-service marina with transient and seasonal dock slips on the island's south shore. It is a popular stop for boaters cruising the Lake Erie Islands and a launch point for fishing and paddling.
The park offers primitive, walk-in tent campsites near the shoreline for visitors who ferry over without a vehicle. Sites are reservable through the Ohio State Parks system and have no hookups.
Middle Bass Island is surrounded by some of Lake Erie's best walleye, yellow perch, and smallmouth bass waters. Anglers fish from the park's shoreline, pier, or by boat launched at the marina.
The Lake Erie Islands are a documented stopover for migrating songbirds and waterbirds. The Lake Erie Islands provide habitat for migrating birds and homes for a host of indigenous flora and fauna, and easy park paths pass shoreline, meadow, and wooded habitats.
A short water-taxi ride connects Middle Bass to South Bass Island and the village of Put-in-Bay. Visitors combine a quiet day at Middle Bass with dining, shopping, and a stop at Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial. nps.gov/pevi/planyourvisit/nearbyattractions.htm
Calm coves along Middle Bass Island's shoreline provide protected paddling on Lake Erie. Paddlers can explore the island perimeter and cross to nearby islands on calm days, keeping a close eye on marine forecasts.
We just wrapped up a wonderful family reunion using Jose as our trailer host on our family property. Jose was great at communicating timing for delivery and pick up and when we had questions about the fridge and furnace, drove out of his way to help. The service was fantastic. I would recommend this camper for a park set up instead of off grid based on our own personal needs, but Jose and his trailer were really great! Thank you again!

Middle Bass Island State Park, OH, United States
Middle Bass Island is not road-accessible, so RVers drive to a mainland ferry terminal and walk or bike onto a passenger ferry; RVs must be parked on the mainland. The closest ferry departure point is Catawba Island near Port Clinton, Ohio, roughly a 90-minute drive from Cleveland and about 2 hours from Detroit or Columbus, with seasonal passenger service from the Miller Ferry dock and from Put-in-Bay. There are no tunnels or mountain passes on the approach, but State Route 53 narrows in places and the Catawba ferry parking lots have limited oversized RV spots, so call ahead for big-rig parking or stage at a nearby mainland campground. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Cleveland Hopkins International (CLE), with Detroit Metropolitan (DTW) and Toledo Express (TOL) as alternatives.
