Best time to visit Old Tunnel State Park

The best time to visit is May through early October, when the bat colony is present and nightly emergences occur at dusk. June through August offers the most reliable, large flights as pups join the adults, though it is also the hottest time in the Hill Country. Spring and early fall shoulder months bring cooler temperatures and fewer crowds at nearby Fredericksburg RV parks. The bats migrate to Mexico for winter, so the park and its programs are closed from late fall through early spring.

Things to do at Old Tunnel State Park

  • Upper Bat Viewing Area Easy
    RV parking available

The upper viewing area is a free, first-come-first-served deck where visitors can watch the nightly Mexican free-tailed bat emergence during the warm season. Arrive about an hour before sunset for a good spot. Park staff often give short talks before the flight.

  • Lower Bat Viewing Program Easy
    RV parking available

The ticketed lower viewing area brings visitors closer to the tunnel mouth for an immersive emergence experience. Programs run on select evenings in summer and fall and should be reserved in advance through Texas Parks and Wildlife. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring insect repellent.

  • Nature Trail Easy
    RV parking available

A short half-mile loop winds through Hill Country oak and juniper woodland near the tunnel. The path is shaded and suitable for families, with interpretive signs on local plants and wildlife. Best walked in the cooler morning hours before returning for the evening bat flight.

  • Wildflower and Bird Watching Easy
    RV parking available

The park grounds host seasonal Texas Hill Country wildflowers in spring and a variety of songbirds year round when open. Bring binoculars and a field guide for painted buntings, vireos, and warblers. Morning light is best for photography along the trail.

  • Hill Country Scenic Drive

The drive along Old San Antonio Road between Fredericksburg, Old Tunnel, and Comfort is a classic Texas Hill Country route with rolling terrain and rural scenery. Pair a daytime drive with an evening bat viewing for a full day out. RVers should plan fuel stops in Fredericksburg or Comfort.

  • Day Trip to Fredericksburg
    RV parking available

Historic Fredericksburg is about ten miles north and offers RV-friendly parking lots, German heritage restaurants, wineries, and the National Museum of the Pacific War. It makes a natural base camp for Old Tunnel visitors. Most area RV parks are clustered along US-290 east and west of town.

Kristen was a fantastic host. We arrived to everything set up and hooked up. The RV was clean and clean linens and towels were on the beds. The outdoor kitchen was perfect for breakfast and the outside fridge was used constantly. Communication was amazing. We had a flight cancelled and Kristen made it work so we didn't miss a thing.

How to get to Old Tunnel State Park

Old Tunnel State Park sits along Old San Antonio Road, about a 15 minute drive south of Fredericksburg and roughly 75 miles (about 1.5 hours) northwest of San Antonio via I-10 and US-87. Austin is about 85 miles east, around two hours by RV. The final approach follows narrow, winding Hill Country ranch roads with some tight curves and grades, so large motorhomes should take their time and avoid after-dark arrivals. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is San Antonio International Airport (SAT); Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) is a secondary option.
