Late April through June and September through October offer the most comfortable weather for RV travel, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and vibrant foliage. Summer months bring warm, humid days and the busiest campground demand, so midweek arrivals help avoid crowds at Hollofield and Hilton. Winter camping is limited as most campsites close seasonally, though day-use trails remain open. Spring river flows make the Patapsco especially scenic for paddling and waterfall viewing.

Cascade Falls Trail is a short, family-friendly hike in the Orange Grove area leading to a scenic multi-tier waterfall. The route crosses the Swinging Bridge over the Patapsco River and connects to a network of longer loops. Parking lots in Orange Grove accommodate vehicles but fill quickly on weekends.
The Avalon Area offers flat, accessible paths along the Patapsco River with views of the historic Thomas Viaduct, one of the oldest stone railroad bridges in the U.S. Paved and gravel trails are ideal for easy walks and biking. Avalon has a large picnic area with pavilions and restrooms.
McKeldin Rapids Trail is a moderate loop in the McKeldin Area that follows ridgelines down to where the North and South Branches of the Patapsco meet. Hikers pass through mature hardwood forest before reaching rocky whitewater views. The McKeldin lot is well-suited for larger vehicles.
Patapsco Valley is a renowned Mid-Atlantic mountain biking destination with singletrack networks at Avalon, Rockburn Branch, and McKeldin. Trails range from beginner doubletrack to technical rock gardens. Bike-friendly lots provide staging space near most trailheads.
The Daniels Area features the remains of a 19th-century mill town, including church foundations and industrial ruins along a quiet stretch of the river. Flat riverside paths make it a relaxing stop for history and photography. Access is via a narrow road off Alberton Road.
Kayakers and canoeists can paddle calmer pools and Class I to II rapids along sections of the Patapsco between Daniels and Avalon. Water levels vary seasonally, with spring offering the best flows. Carry-in access points are located at Daniels, McKeldin, and Avalon.
The Hilton Area provides forested campsites, picnic pavilions, and a short trail network connecting to the broader Avalon-Orange Grove system. It is popular with families for its quieter setting on the valley rim. A playground and reservable cabins round out the amenities.
We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to rent from Vanessa! The camper van is so clean and has everything you could imagine. Our trip was a bit last minute, yet Vanessa was gracious and accommodating to our requests. It ended up being a very special trip and we owe a large portion of it to having this camper van! Thank you again!!

Patapsco Valley State Park, MD, United States
The park sits roughly 10 to 15 miles southwest of downtown Baltimore and about 35 miles northeast of Washington, D.C., with most recreation areas reached via I-95, I-695, I-70, or US-40. Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) Airport is about 15 minutes from the Avalon and Hilton areas, making it a practical fly-and-rent option. RV drivers should avoid the narrow, low-clearance River Road through the Avalon valley in larger rigs and use the main entrances off US-40 (Hollofield) or Rolling Road (Hilton) instead. Expect steep, winding park roads and some tight turns; rigs over 35 feet should confirm site dimensions before booking.
