Peter Lougheed Provincial Park is 135 kilometres (85 miles) west of Calgary, approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes by car via Highway 1 and Highway 40 through Kananaskis Country. The nearby town of Canmore is 61 kilometres (38 miles) away, roughly 1 hour of driving, and offers RV-friendly services and accommodations. Calgary International Airport (YYC) is the nearest major air hub, located 140 kilometres away with an approximate 1 hour and 45 minute drive to the park. Note that Highway 40 is closed from December 1 through June 14 south of the winter gate due to avalanche danger and snow conditions.
July and August offer the warmest and most stable weather, with daytime temperatures around 23-24°C (73-75°F), ideal for all outdoor activities. June and September provide pleasant shoulder-season conditions with moderate temperatures and smaller crowds, though higher precipitation occurs in June. Winter access is restricted as Highway 40 closes from December 1 through June 14 south of the winter gate, limiting vehicle access to the southern park areas. Campgrounds operate seasonally from mid-May through mid-October only.

Rawson Lake is a scenic 6.8-kilometre return hike featuring waterfalls, boardwalks, and an alpine lake surrounded by mountain peaks. Chester Lake is a 9.3-kilometre return hike passing through subalpine forest and meadows to a pristine mountain lake. This moderate trail provides panoramic Rocky Mountain views and is accessible from a well-maintained trailhead.
The Blackshale Suspension Bridge offers a thrilling crossing over Blackshale Creek with spectacular canyon views. This short, easy walk is accessible to visitors of all abilities; winter access is limited when snow conditions close the crossing.
Peter Lougheed Provincial Park offers paved trails for novice cyclists and rugged backcountry routes for experienced mountain bikers. Hundreds of kilometres of trails provide options for all skill levels with stunning Rocky Mountain scenery.
Fishing is available in the Kananaskis Lakes and rivers throughout the park. The lakes support a productive fishery and are accessible from multiple campgrounds and day-use areas.
In winter, the park's groomed trail system provides excellent opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Access is limited when Highway 40 closes from December through mid-June.
Peter Lougheed Provincial Park supports diverse wildlife including elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and grizzly bears. Spring and early summer are prime times for wildlife observation, though visitors must follow park safety protocols.
