July and August bring the warmest, driest weather on Vancouver Island's east coast and the best conditions for beach days, swimming on incoming tides, and full campground services. This is a very popular camping destination year-round, and reservations are required during the summer. Shoulder months of May, June, and September offer milder crowds and comfortable RV travel weather. From February to April, migrating Brant geese use Rathtrevor Beach as staging and feeding areas during their spring migration to northern Canada and Alaska, making late winter a draw for birders.

The park's signature activity is strolling the 2 km sandy beach at low tide. Very low tides are common, with the ocean receding almost a kilometre, exposing wide sand flats ideal for families, shell seekers, and sunset walkers. bcparks.ca/rathtrevor-beach-park/
Rathtrevor Beach Park offers 5.5 km of easy walking trails, most of which are wheelchair accessible, meandering along the beach and weaving through mature forests, with short trails linking the campsites to the beach and another trail looping around a pretty heritage farm field. bcparks.ca/rathtrevor-beach-park/
Bird watching is popular here; in spring, large numbers of seabirds congregate for the annual herring spawn, and from February to April, Rathtrevor Beach is one of Vancouver Island's best spots for viewing migrating Brant geese. bcparks.ca/rathtrevor-beach-park/
The park offers some of the warmest saltwater swimming on Vancouver Island. At low tide, the ocean recedes almost a kilometre, providing an ideal place for children to play, and when the tide rolls in over the sun-baked sand, the warmed water is perfect for swimming; there are no lifeguards on duty in BC Parks. bcparks.ca/rathtrevor-beach-park/
Rathtrevor is a favourite spot for wind-powered watersports. There are opportunities for ocean windsurfing in Rathtrevor Beach Park, and the view and wind conditions make it an excellent spot for windsurfers. bcparks.ca/rathtrevor-beach-park/
Cyclists can explore the park on designated routes. Bicycles are allowed in Rathtrevor Beach Park, but they must keep to roads and designated trails, and cycling on the beach is not allowed. bcparks.ca/rathtrevor-beach-park/
Boaters and anglers can launch just north of the park. Rathtrevor Beach Park does not have a boat launch; the closest boat launch is at the French Creek Marina, which is 8 km north of the park on Highway 19A. bcparks.ca/rathtrevor-beach-park/

We loved our trip up Vancouver Island, and across to Quadra and Cortes islands too. Having an RV , along with our bikes (we brought our hitch bike rack), meant we had a lot of flexibility. Our little dogs had a blast too. At the pickup, Jessica explained how everything worked, and urged us to reach out with any questions during our trip. When we did have a question, she was very quick to respond. Returning the RV was also very easy, and Jessica was flexible with the time. She appreciated that we returned the RV clean. Would absolutely recommend Jessica and her RV to anyone considering a trip on Vancouver Island.

Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, BC, Canada
The park is located just south of Parksville, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island, roughly a 35 to 40 minute drive north from Nanaimo via Highway 19 or 19A. From Victoria, plan on about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive north along the Island Highway. RV travellers should note that reaching Vancouver Island requires a BC Ferries crossing (typically Tsawwassen to Duke Point or Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay), where vehicle length and height are measured and surcharges apply to larger rigs. Nanaimo Airport (YCD) is the closest airport for fly-and-rent trips, with Victoria International (YYJ) and Vancouver International (YVR, via ferry) as larger alternatives.
