Late fall through early spring, roughly November to March, is the best window for an RV trip. Mild daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s F make trail walking and birding comfortable, and this period coincides with peak migration and the arrival of winter specialties in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Summer months are hot and humid with high mosquito activity, while hurricane season runs June through November and can bring heavy rain. Shoulder months of April and October offer fewer Winter Texan crowds but rising heat.

A short, flat loop near the visitor center that winds through thorn-scrub habitat. It is a prime spot for spotting great kiskadees, green jays, and Altamira orioles.
This shaded interior trail passes through a grove of Texas ebony trees and connects to the resaca overlooks. Expect level walking and abundant songbirds.
A longer walking route that explores restored brushland and wetland edges. Rare species such as Botteri's Sparrow, Northern Bobwhite, and Roseate Spoonbill are sometimes seen in the area.
Observation points along the resaca offer open water views for waterbirds and wading species. The dark waters host alligator gar and soft-shell turtles, and egrets and spoonbills frequent the area.
Bikes are permitted on the interior service roads, offering a quiet way to cover more ground. Riders should carry water and watch for pedestrians and tram traffic.
The visitor center introduces the ecology of the Rio Grande Delta and the World Birding Center network. It also stocks field guides, maps, and trail information for first-time visitors.

Resaca de la Palma State Park, TX, United States
The park sits on the north side of Brownsville, Texas, roughly 5 to 10 minutes from downtown and about 30 minutes from South Padre Island. San Antonio is roughly a 4.5 hour drive north on US 281, and Corpus Christi is about 2.5 hours up US 77. Approach routes are flat coastal highways with no mountain passes or tunnels, making RV navigation straightforward, though travelers should watch for low-clearance drive-throughs and narrow residential streets near the entrance on New Carmen Avenue. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips is Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO), with larger service at Valley International Airport (HRL) in Harlingen.
