Best time to visit Rocky Gap State Park

Late May through early October is generally the best window for RV travel, with warm days suited to swimming, boating, and lakeside camping. July and August are the busiest months, so reservations book up quickly and weekends can be crowded at the beach and boat launch. Shoulder months like May, September, and early October offer cooler nights, strong fall color on Evitts Mountain, and easier campsite availability. Winter visits are possible for day use, but most campground loops and water-based amenities are closed outside the main season.

Things to do at Rocky Gap State Park

  • Lake Habeeb Swim Beach and Day-Use Area Easy
    RV parking available

The Lake Habeeb swim beach is a sandy guarded swimming area on the park's 243-acre mountain lake. RV visitors can park at the day-use lot, spread out on the beach, and access picnic pavilions, restrooms, and a concession area in peak season.

  • Lakeside Loop Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The Lakeside Loop Trail circles Lake Habeeb for roughly 5 miles through hardwood forest and along quiet coves. It is a mostly flat, well-marked route that links the campground, swim beach, and boat launch, making it an easy day hike straight from an RV site.

  • Evitts Homesite Trail Strenuous
    RV parking available

Evitts Homesite Trail climbs Evitts Mountain to the remains of an early settler's homestead high above Lake Habeeb. Expect a steady uphill grade through mixed hardwoods with ridgetop views, best suited to hikers comfortable with sustained elevation gain.

  • Rocky Gap Run Gorge Moderate
    RV parking available

Rocky Gap Run carves a narrow, boulder-strewn gorge at the north end of the park that gives Rocky Gap its name. Short trails and overlooks let visitors take in the hemlock-shaded stream and rock outcrops without a long hike from the trailhead.

  • Boating and Paddling on Lake Habeeb Easy
    RV parking available

Lake Habeeb is open to non-gas-powered boats, with kayak, canoe, paddleboard, and pedal boat rentals available seasonally at the park marina. A boat launch with trailer parking makes it practical to bring your own small craft when traveling by RV.

  • Fishing on Lake Habeeb Easy
    RV parking available

The lake is stocked and supports bass, trout, bluegill, yellow perch, and tiger muskie. Shoreline fishing is possible from multiple points near the campground and day-use area; a valid Maryland freshwater fishing license is required for adults.

  • Aviary and Nature Center Programs Easy
    RV parking available

The park nature center hosts raptor displays and seasonal ranger-led programs on local wildlife, geology, and Appalachian history. It is a short drive or walk from the campground and makes a good rainy-day stop for RV families.
