Late spring through early fall, roughly May to September, offers the most reliable weather, with warmer temperatures, lower rainfall, and better low-tide beach access for exploring tidepools and the scuba park. July and August are peak months and parking can fill on sunny weekends, so midweek visits are easier for larger rigs. Shoulder months like April and October bring quieter trails and moody Puget Sound scenery, though rain gear is essential. Winter visits are possible since the park is open year-round for day use, but expect frequent rain and short daylight hours.
Park open for day use, cool and wet.
Frequent rain, check tide tables for beach walks.
Quiet shoulder season for trails.
Pleasant hiking weather.
Peak season, weekend parking fills quickly.
Peak season, arrive early for shaded picnic spots.
Warm days, thinner crowds.
Heaviest rain period.
Open for day use, short daylight hours.
The park's saltwater shoreline on Nisqually Reach is the main draw, offering sandy and gravel beach access for walking, beachcombing, and viewing marine life at low tide. Check a tide chart before visiting for the best tidepooling conditions.
An offshore artificial reef built from sunken barges makes Tolmie a well-known scuba diving destination in South Puget Sound. Divers should be experienced with cold water and strong currents, and should follow all posted safety guidance.
Short forested trails loop through second-growth Douglas fir and cedar between the upper parking area and the beach. The paths are family friendly and give a quick sampling of Puget Sound lowland forest.
The park has picnic tables, a picnic shelter, and open grassy areas overlooking the water. It is a popular spot for a midday stop between Olympia and Tacoma while touring the South Sound region.
Tolmie's mix of saltwater shoreline, salt marsh, and mixed forest attracts shorebirds, herons, bald eagles, and songbirds. Binoculars and a field guide make for a rewarding morning visit.
The park's tidelands and nearby waters offer shore fishing and seasonal crabbing opportunities in Puget Sound. A current Washington State fishing license and review of shellfish regulations are required before casting.
Benches and open overlooks near the beach provide wide views across Nisqually Reach toward Anderson Island and the Key Peninsula. On clear days the Olympic Mountains form the backdrop to the west.
Really great RV that was easy to drive and worked really well. Lots of space with the pop out, AC blows cold and the heating is warm. Was very comfortable the whole time. Steve the host is great and took the time to show me how everything worked in detail and had me completely comfortable to go on my trip. Canโt recommend this rental enough. Thank you.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are โroughing itโ. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!

Tolmie State Park, WA, United States
Tolmie State Park sits off 56th Avenue NE near the Nisqually Reach, about a 15 to 20 minute drive from Olympia and roughly 30 minutes south of Tacoma via Interstate 5. From Seattle the drive is approximately 60 miles and takes around 75 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. The final approach uses narrow, winding two-lane residential roads with a few tight turns and limited shoulders, so larger motorhomes and long trailers should drive slowly and plan a pull-through route rather than tight U-turns. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), about 50 miles north.
