Wabamun Lake Provincial Park is 60 kilometers west of Edmonton via Highway 16A (Yellowhead Highway), approximately 45-50 minutes by vehicle. From Calgary, the park is roughly 355 kilometers northeast. Highway 16A is a four-lane divided highway with no reported RV restrictions or mountain passes. This scenic hiking trail loops around the lake shoreline for 3.1 miles with easy terrain and minimal elevation gain, taking approximately 1.5 hours to complete. The trail is accessible from the campground and offers views of the lake and surrounding forest.
The park features a sandy beach with a designated swimming area, particularly in the Wabamun Lake Day Use Area with calmer waters in Half-Moon Bay. The beach includes facilities like showers, picnic areas, and is ideal for sunbathing and water activities in summer months.
Wabamun Lake accommodates motorized and non-motorized watercraft for boating, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing, and tubing. Two boat launches provide access, and canoe and kayak rentals are available at the park store.
The lake supports populations of northern pike, walleye, lake whitefish, yellow perch, and other species. Fishing is available from shore or boat throughout the open season, making it accessible for both casual and experienced anglers.
Multiple trails throughout the park accommodate cycling and mountain biking, including the Campground Loop trail which is approximately 3.5 miles long. E-bikes are welcome on designated trails.
The lake environment attracts diverse waterfowl including bald eagles, hooded mergansers, loons, herons, terns, and various migratory species. The open-water areas near thermal power plants provide year-round viewing opportunities.
The scenic boardwalk at the Half-Moon Bay day-use area provides accessible viewing of the lake and surrounding landscape. This area features a large sandy beach, picnic shelters, and facilities for day-use visitors.
Tyler was excellent to communicate with. Even helped when my hitch was too high. Perfect for what I needed.
