William A. Switzer Provincial Park, AB, Canada
The park is located 30 km northwest of Hinton via Highway 16 and Highway 40, approximately 1-1.5 hours southwest of Jasper. From Edmonton International Airport, the drive takes approximately four hours via Highway 16 west. Highway 40 winds through the foothills with steep grades and narrow sections, so RV drivers should exercise caution with larger units and check road conditions before travel, especially in winter when snow closures can occur. Cell service is limited along Highway 40, so plan fuel stops and communication accordingly.
Summer, particularly July and August, offers the best weather for RV camping, with warm days averaging 22 to 23 degrees Celsius and access to all facilities and trails. May through early September is ideal for enjoying water activities on all five lakes, with main roads remaining clear and all campgrounds fully operational. Shoulder seasons in May and September provide pleasant weather with fewer visitors. Winter visitors can experience frozen landscapes with cross-country skiing and ice fishing, but should be prepared for snow and potential road closures on Highway 40.

This moderate 6.7 mile out-and-back trail gains 1,765 feet in elevation over 4 to 4.5 hours. The route follows an old forest road for the first 2.5 km before climbing steeply to a viewpoint with panoramic views of the foothills and surrounding lakes. Rocky footing is common; trekking poles and sturdy footwear are recommended. alltrails.com/trail/canada/alberta/athabasca-lookout-trail

All five lakes support fishing for rainbow trout, northern pike, and whitefish with an Alberta fishing license. The park hosts an ice-fishing derby in February and maintains a stocked trout pond. albertaparks.ca/parks/central/william-a-switzer-pp/activities-events/recreational-activities/
Jarvis Lake is the only park lake where gas-powered boats are permitted, making it suitable for waterskiing and tubing. The park maintains designated boating areas with safe speeds for these activities. albertaparks.ca/parks/central/william-a-switzer-pp/
This easy 2.5 km trail loops through forested terrain around Gregg Lake, ending at a small beach. The well-maintained path is accessible from day-use parking and suitable for families and casual hikers. albertaparks.ca/parks/central/william-a-switzer-pp/information-facilities/trails/trail-report/gregg-lake/
In winter, the park's 65 km trail system becomes a destination for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Graveyard Lake and Jarvis Lake campgrounds remain open year-round for winter camping and recreation. albertaparks.ca/parks/central/william-a-switzer-pp/activities-events/recreational-activities/
