Muskoseepi Park is the central recreation corridor in Grande Prairie, with a connected trail network, the Grande Prairie Museum, a spray deck, outdoor pool, mini-golf, an amphitheatre, and a stocked fishing pond. Bear Creek Reservoir within the park has a hand boat launch for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats. West of the city, Saskatoon Island Provincial Park offers paddling on Saskatoon Lake, a bird-viewing platform, and a wheelchair-accessible shoreline trail. Trumpeter swans frequent the park and a yearly swan festival is held each April. The Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, west of Grande Prairie near Wembley, is a popular family stop on rainy days.

Grande Prairie has a subarctic climate with frigid, snowy winters and short, comfortable summers. Most private and municipal campgrounds operate from May through the end of September. Grande Prairie Rotary Campground runs May 1 to September 30, which is a reasonable proxy for what RV renters can expect across the area. July is the wettest month, averaging around 80 mm of precipitation, and June through August carry the bulk of the rainfall, so packing for showers and quick-changing skies is sensible even at the height of summer. Shoulder seasons are short. Spring thaw arrives slowly through April, and overnight lows can stay below freezing into May. Fall colours peak in mid to late September, but by October overnight temperatures regularly drop below zero and most private parks have closed for the season. Saskatoon Island Provincial Park is open year-round for day use and camping, though water, showers, and sewage disposal are only available seasonally, so RV hookups become limited late in the year.

Expect a working northern Alberta city rather than a resort town. Roads are wide, fuel and propane are easy to find, and most private parks cater to a mix of work-camp tenants and travelling RVers, so weekday occupancy can be high. Grande Prairie Rotary Campground has 61 sites across three zones, a full-service area, pull-throughs with power and water, and back-ins with power and water, plus on-site laundry, showers, and a sani-station for registered guests. Saskatoon Island Provincial Park has 103 sites with 55 powered hookups in Loops A and C, unserviced sites in Loop B, walk-in tenting along the shoreline, and a group-use area. Cell coverage is strong in town and along Highway 43, weaker on rural range roads. Bear-aware food storage is expected at provincial sites.
