Jasper National Park is the main draw, with the east gate roughly 15 to 20 minutes from town for day trips to Maligne Canyon, Athabasca Falls, the Icefields Parkway and the Jasper SkyTram. Closer to camp, activities in William A. Switzer Provincial Park include swimming at the beach, paddling Jarvis Lake and Jarvis Creek, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. The small lakes around Kinky Lake allow only electric motors, so anglers fish quietly for rainbow and brook trout. During summer, families can join park interpretive programs and amphitheatre shows at Switzer. Hinton itself has groceries, fuel, laundry and an aquatic centre for resupply days.

The practical RV season runs from May through early October. Alberta Parks campgrounds in the Switzer chain typically open mid-May and close in early fall, while Kinky Lake in Wildhorse Lake Provincial Recreation Area operates roughly May through October. June through August is peak season: weekends book out far in advance, lakeshore loops fill first, and the surrounding area sees the most visitors heading to Jasper. July is the warmest month at around 21 degrees Celsius, while January is the coldest at around -5 degrees Celsius. Annual precipitation totals around 715 mm, with June the wettest month. Shoulder seasons trade crowds for cooler nights and the risk of early snow. Late May and September often deliver the best mix of availability and weather, though overnight lows can drop below freezing. Spring brings mud on gravel access roads and limited services at rustic sites; water is not available from the hand pump at Cache Lake Campground, Jarvis Lake Campground or Kelleys Bathtub Day Use Area, so come prepared with your own water. Wildfire smoke from regional fires can affect air quality in mid to late summer, and fire bans are common in dry years.

Hookups vary widely. The KOA offers full-hookup pull-thru sites with water, power, sewer and cable TV at 30 and 50 amp service. Provincial sites are more rustic: Jarvis Lake Campground offers 25 powered sites on Jarvis Lake with a small beach, playground, vault toilets, dock and hand launch, while Cache and Graveyard lakes are basic forested sites with vault toilets and no power. Bring fresh water, a dump-station plan, and bear-aware food storage. Switzer Park is home to grizzly and black bears, wolves, cougars, moose, deer, eagles and loons, so lock food in the RV and keep pets leashed. Cell service is spotty once off Highway 16, and gravel access roads to Kinky Lake require slow driving.
