Campgrounds and RV parks near Slave Lake, AB

Fishing is the headline activity. Lesser Slave Lake is known for walleye and northern pike, and most lakeside campgrounds either include a boat launch on site or sit minutes from one. Big Fish Bay RV Resort is about five minutes from the free municipal boat launch, and Spruce Point Park Campground and Marina runs a full-service marina with fuel, slips, tackle, and a fish-cleaning station. Families use Devonshire Beach for swimming and long sand walks, and the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation inside Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park covers the area's role as a major songbird migration corridor. Hikers can tackle the Freighter Lakeshore Trail, part of the Trans Canada Trail, and the Marten Mountain viewpoint. OHV riders use trail networks reachable from the Trapper Leas Cabin Recreation Area area.

The camping season is short. Marten River Campground and the rest of Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park generally operate from May through October. Private resorts on the south shore run on similar schedules, with shoulder-season operations tied to weather. July and August are peak season. Daytime temperatures are warmest, the lake is swimmable on warm afternoons, and weekends around Canada Day and the August long weekend fill quickly. Cell service can be spotty inside treed loops and at properties further from town. Water at Marten River comes from standpipes in the campground; bring a jug or filter if you prefer. Expect bears in the boreal forest surrounding the lake, and store food and scented items inside your RV or hard-sided storage. The town of Slave Lake covers full groceries, fuel, hardware, and RV supplies, and is roughly a 30-minute drive from Marten River.
