Campgrounds and RV parks near Clive, AB

Buffalo Lake dominates the local recreation map. The Narrows Provincial Recreation Area sits along a narrow channel connecting two portions of the lake, with a boat launch, shore fishing, and bird watching among the willows and cottonwoods. Pike fishing is the main draw, and canoes and kayaks suit the channel better than larger boats. Golfers head to Wolf Creek Golf Resort, a well-known central Alberta course that also accommodates RV stays. Quad and dirt-bike riders use designated trails in the surrounding county, and birders watch for waterfowl along the lake margins during migration. Day trips from Clive reach Lacombe's historic downtown, the Ellis Bird Farm near Prentiss, and Red Deer's river-valley trail network. In winter, ice fishing huts appear on Buffalo Lake once the ice is safe.

Central Alberta has a short, intense camping season. Most provincial and private campgrounds open in mid-May, around the Victoria Day long weekend, and close in early to mid-October after Thanksgiving. The Narrows Provincial Recreation Area is closed from mid-October to early May, with operating dates weather dependent. July and August are the peak months, with warm days, long evenings, and the highest demand at lakeside sites. June brings the wettest weather of the year, with thunderstorms common in the afternoon and occasional severe-weather watches issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada. September is often the sweet spot for RV travellers: cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier site availability, though frost arrives by late month at this elevation. Winter camping options are limited. Fawn Meadows Lodge, Cabins and Year Round RV Park is one of the few sites in the area that stays open year-round; most others shut off water lines well before freeze-up. Chinook winds can push winter temperatures briefly above zero, but extended cold snaps below minus twenty are normal between December and February.

Roads into the Clive area are paved highways and well-maintained county gravel; most RV rigs handle access without trouble. Cell coverage is reliable in the village and along Highway 12 but can drop on back roads near the lakes. Mosquitoes and horseflies peak from late June through early August, especially near water, so screens and repellent matter. Black bears are uncommon this far into farmland, but coyotes and deer are routine, and food should still be stored securely. The Narrows offers 59 unserviced individual sites plus one group site, with only a small handful able to accommodate trailers over 32 feet; full hookups are found mainly at the private resorts. Fire bans are issued by Alberta Wildfire during dry stretches and apply to open fires even inside campgrounds, so check the current status before arrival.
