Campgrounds and RV parks near Falher, AB

Lakes drive most activity in this area. A hand launch at Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park gives kayaks, canoes, and small watercraft access to Lac Cardinal, whose shallow waters do not support a fish population but attract abundant waterfowl. Over 140 bird and wildlife species have been recorded in the park, and a bird viewing platform is on site. At Winagami Lake, the campground sits a short walk or bike ride from the day use area, playground, wading pool, boat launch, and piers. Activities across these parks include swimming, sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, hiking, mountain biking, paddling, and, in winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Shaws Point Lakeside Resort adds a sandy beach on Lesser Slave Lake that suits families with young kids.

The camping season in this part of northern Alberta is short and concentrated. Provincial park campgrounds typically open around the May long weekend and close in early to mid October. Winagami Lake Campground has run its season into mid October in recent operating windows, with water shut off for the season in mid September. Winagami Lake Campground sells bundled firewood from the May long weekend through to the September long weekend, a useful indicator of the core operating window. July and early August are the busiest weeks, when lakeside sites at Winagami and Queen Elizabeth fill quickly and private resorts like Shaws Point Lakeside Resort see heavy weekend demand. May and September are quieter, with cool nights and fewer bugs. Low water levels have affected boat launch access at Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park, where the launch is currently unable to accommodate boats with trailers and can only be used as a hand launch, so travellers planning to tow a boat should confirm conditions before booking. Winter camping in the area is essentially limited to backcountry or self-contained stays.

Sites in this region lean rustic by southern Alberta standards. Winagami Lake Campground has 66 treed sites suitable for both tents and RVs, with both unserviced and powered options, fire pits, pit toilets in the loops, and flush toilets and showers in the shower building. A sewage disposal station sits a 2-minute drive from the campground near the park entrance. Queen Elizabeth has a mix of power and unserviced sites tucked into the forest along the lake shore, with fire pits, picnic tables, potable water, washrooms, hiking trails, a hand launch and pier, a playground, picnic shelter, and a sewage dumping station. Power sites use a mix of 15 amp and 20 amp breakers, so big rigs running multiple appliances should plan accordingly. Cell coverage is patchy outside town centres, and the nearest full-service supply stop is typically High Prairie or Falher itself.
