Camping near Flagstaff County
Flagstaff County sits in east-central Alberta along the Highway 13 corridor, southeast of Edmonton. The county covers rolling parkland prairie and the Battle River valley, with small communities scattered across farmland. RV travellers come for quiet municipal campgrounds, golf-course RV parks, and one nearby provincial park.
Sedgewick Lake Park Campground is the closest full-service option, with serviced and unserviced sites suitable for tents and RVs, plus a wading pool, spray park, and lakeside walking trails. Forestburg Golf Club & RV Park has fully serviced sites adjacent to a nine-hole course. Big Knife Provincial Park sits along the Battle River between Donalda and Forestburg and offers a mix of open and treed sites with views of the Battle River badlands. Double Dam Golf Course & Campground pairs camping with a nearby golf course, and Vegreville Elks-Kinsmen Municipal Campground anchors a larger town stop next to Highway 16A to the north.
Things to do in Flagstaff County
The Battle River valley shapes most outdoor activity in the region. At Big Knife Provincial Park, visitors can hike the River Flats Trail past hoodoos, paddle a canoe or kayak on the calm river, fish for northern pike, walleye, perch, and goldeye, and watch for elk, moose, and birds in the parkland forest. The Highland Trail climbs through mixed forest to viewpoints over the valley. Sedgewick Lake is closed to motorboats, which keeps the lake quiet for paddling, and a nine-hole golf course sits about half a kilometre from the campground. Forestburg and Double Dam add golf within steps of the RV sites. In Vegreville, the campground sits next to the World's Largest Pysanka, a fishing pond, walking trails, and an accessible playground.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Flagstaff County?
RV rental in Flagstaff County is one of the most affordable ways to explore east-central Alberta, with most travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 CAD per night and Class C motorhomes typically ranging from $180 to $300 CAD per night. Pro tip: many hosts in nearby Camrose and Wetaskiwin offer cheap RV rental Flagstaff County options with included kilometres, so messaging a few hosts can score you a great deal.
flagstaff.ca/explore-discover/What license do I need to rent an RV in Flagstaff County, Alberta?

No special RV licence or commercial endorsement is required for motorhomes and travel trailers commonly listed on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform during checkout, so there are no extra trips to make. Visiting from abroad? During checkout you choose the level of coverage that fits your comfort level, so you stay in control of your deductible and protection. The plan is set by RVezy and not by the host, which keeps things fair and consistent. Pair that with Alberta's generally light rural traffic and your motorhome rental Flagstaff County trip starts to feel pretty stress-free.

Because RVezy manages the policy platform-wide, you don't have to compare confusing host-by-host rules. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for Flagstaff Region rodeo weekends and the Gathering of the Clans Highland Games in Sedgewick, then relax knowing flexibility is built in.

albertaparks.ca/albertaparksca/visitor-info/pets-in-parks/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Flagstaff County?
Yes, RV delivery Flagstaff County is one of the smartest moves for first-timers and families alike. Many hosts will drive the RV straight to your campsite at Big Knife Provincial Park, Diplomat Trout Pond, Fish Lake, or even a private acreage, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero stress about backing into a tight site after a long drive from Edmonton or Calgary. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it and the per-kilometre rate. Pro tip: delivery is especially handy at first-come, first-served spots like Big Knife where you want to claim your site early.

You've got plenty of road to roam. Most Flagstaff County hosts include a daily kilometre allowance (commonly 200 to 300 km per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage packages if you're planning a longer loop. From Flagstaff County's central hub near Killam, you're well-positioned: Edmonton is about 150 km northwest, Drumheller and the Badlands are around 250 km south, Elk Island National Park is roughly 130 km away, and Saskatchewan's border is just 130 km east. Pro tip: stack a few flat prairie days at the start of your trip to bank kilometres for scenic detours along Highway 13.
alberta.ca/highway-conditionsWhere are the best campgrounds for RV camping in Flagstaff County?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Flagstaff County. Some of the best campgrounds near Flagstaff County include Big Knife Provincial Park (51 first-come sites with badlands views, 8 km west and 13 km south of Forestburg), Fish Lake Campground (lakeside relaxation just 2 km west of Hardisty), Diplomat Trout Pond & Campground (15 sites and great fishing southwest of Forestburg), Edgerton Day Campground near Daysland (12 powered sites with a playground), and Galahad Campground (6 fully serviced sites with water and power). Donalda Campground, just outside the county, even stays open year-round. Pro tip: powered sites at Edgerton and Galahad book up fast on long weekends, so reserve early through Campspot.
albertaparks.ca/parks/central/big-knife-pp/When is the best time of year for a Flagstaff County RV trip?
The sweet spot for a Flagstaff County RV trip runs from mid-May through mid-September, when daytime temperatures sit in a comfortable 18 to 25 C range and the prairie skies stretch endlessly above you. July and August are warmest (often hitting 27 to 30 C) and align with rodeos in Killam, Sedgewick, and Hardisty plus the Battle River Train Excursions. June offers lush green landscapes and fewer mosquitoes than later summer, while September brings golden canola stubble and crisp stargazing nights. Winters are genuinely cold (often below minus 20 C), so most owners pause rentals from late October to April. Pro tip: aim for late August for warm days, cool nights, and harvest-season scenery.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/I've never driven an RV before. Is Flagstaff County a good place to start?
Flagstaff County is honestly one of the best places in Alberta for a first time renting an RV. The region is wide-open prairie with quiet rural highways like Highway 13 and Highway 36, minimal traffic, gentle terrain, and forgiving sightlines, which is a dream compared to driving an RV through downtown Calgary or the mountain passes near Banff. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, the dump valves, and slide-outs, and you can message them any time during your trip. Pro tip: take a short practice loop on a township road before pulling into Big Knife Provincial Park so your first reverse is at a quiet pull-through.
alberta.ca/driving-in-albertaWhat happens if I break down during my Flagstaff County RV rental?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire or dead battery on Highway 13 doesn't derail your trip. One call connects you with help for towing, tire changes, fuel delivery, lockouts, and battery jumps anywhere in Flagstaff County. Cell service is generally strong along major highways and through towns like Killam, Sedgewick, Forestburg, and Hardisty, though it can dip in the Battle River Valley. Your host is also just a message away for RV-specific questions, like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before leaving the host's driveway.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Flagstaff County RV rental on a longer road trip across Alberta or into Saskatchewan?
Yes, an RV road trip from Flagstaff County into the rest of Alberta or across into Saskatchewan is totally doable and a popular choice. Most hosts allow interprovincial travel within Canada with no extra paperwork, since the protection package and roadside assistance follow you. Cross-border travel into the United States may be allowed by some hosts (just confirm by messaging them before booking), but travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Popular routes include Highway 13 east to Lloydminster and into Saskatchewan, Highway 41 south to Cypress Hills, and Highway 16 west to Jasper. Pro tip: keep your booking confirmation and host contact info handy at any provincial border check.
canada.ca/en/border-services-agency.htmlHow much should I budget for fuel on a Flagstaff County RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable on any RV trip, but Flagstaff County's flat prairie terrain is kind to your wallet. Expect roughly 18 to 25 L/100 km (around 9 to 13 mpg) for a Class C motorhome, 14 to 18 L/100 km for a campervan rental Flagstaff County, and 15 to 20 L/100 km for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Alberta gas prices typically run lower than the Canadian average, with stations in Killam, Sedgewick, Hardisty, and Forestburg offering competitive pricing. For a 5-day, 800 km loop, budget roughly $200 to $350 CAD for fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Killam or Hardisty before heading out to Big Knife, where the nearest pumps are 30 minutes away.
economicdashboard.alberta.ca/dashboard/gasoline-price/How far in advance should I book campgrounds in Flagstaff County?
For most Flagstaff County campgrounds, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is plenty, which is refreshingly easygoing compared to Banff or Jasper bookings. Edgerton Day, Diplomat Trout Pond, Galahad, and several other county-run campgrounds use the Campspot reservation system and open seasonal bookings each spring. Big Knife Provincial Park is first-come, first-served, so arrive Thursday morning for a summer long weekend to grab a spot. For July long weekend, Heritage Day weekend, and the Gathering of the Clans Highland Games in Sedgewick, push that window to 6 to 8 weeks. Pro tip: many hosts will deliver the RV directly to your reserved site, so book the campsite first, then filter for Delivery on RVezy.
albertaparks.ca/albertaparksca/visitor-info/reservations/What are the driving conditions like in Flagstaff County?
Driving in Flagstaff County is about as relaxed as it gets in Alberta. Highway 13 (the main east-west route through Daysland, Killam, Sedgewick, and Hardisty) and Highway 36 are well-maintained, two-lane paved roads with very light traffic, wide shoulders, and almost no elevation changes. Watch for occasional gravel range roads if you're heading to Big Knife or Diplomat Trout Pond. The biggest things to keep an eye out for are wildlife (deer and moose at dawn and dusk), strong prairie crosswinds that can push high-profile RVs, and the occasional summer thunderstorm with brief heavy rain. Pro tip: check 511 Alberta the morning of your drive for any wind advisories or construction delays.

albertaparks.ca/parks/central/big-knife-pp/information-facilities/What's included inside a typical Flagstaff County RV rental?
Most RV rentals in Flagstaff County come fully equipped so you can pretty much show up with groceries and clothes. Expect a queen or king bed plus bunks or convertible dinettes (rigs sleep 2 to 8), a propane stove and oven, a fridge and freezer, a microwave, a bathroom with shower and toilet, a furnace, air conditioning, and seatbelts for every passenger you're allowed to carry. Many rigs also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and a generator for off-grid stays at Big Knife. Wi-Fi is occasionally included, but rural cell coverage works well as a hotspot in the Flagstaff Region. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities list for heated tanks if you're booking in May or September.
alberta.ca/seatbelts-and-child-safety-seatsAre there add-ons or extras I can request for my Flagstaff County rental?
Yes, hosts in the Flagstaff Region commonly offer fun and practical add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include camping chairs and tables, BBQs and propane tanks (often $20 to $50 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), bike racks, generators, and even fishing gear, perfect for Diplomat Trout Pond. Many hosts also offer kilometre packages so you can lock in unlimited or higher-allowance kms upfront. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Killam, Daysland, Forestburg, or nearby Camrose, with a 15 to 30 minute walkthrough included. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you plan to stay at Big Knife, where there are no electrical hookups.
albertaparks.ca/parks/central/big-knife-pp/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and 100% online: when you confirm your Flagstaff County booking, RVezy charges your payment method for the rental total, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card before pickup. The deposit amount varies by listing and is released after the trip once the host confirms there's no damage and the rig was returned per the agreement. Everything happens through the RVezy platform, so there's no cash exchanged with the host. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the RV's interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff for a smooth deposit return after your family RV trip Flagstaff County.
