Campgrounds and RV parks near White Fish Lake 128, AB

Activity here centres on the lakes and boreal forest. Garner Lake is suited to canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming, with about 5 kilometres of trails for walking and cycling and a grassy playground area. Due to low lake levels and the lake-bed condition, the Garner Lake boat launch is now a hand-launch only site, so larger motorboats should head elsewhere. At Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park, paddling, beach days, birding, fishing, and boating are the main draws, with hiking trails and a boardwalk winding through 300-year-old boreal forest. Touchwood Lake is a favourite with anglers and families, and a staging area just outside the campsite gives access to the OHV trail network throughout Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area. Ironwood Lake is a small lake suited to wildlife watching, birding, and paddling.

The usable camping season in this part of northern Alberta runs roughly from the May long weekend through Thanksgiving in October. Peak season at the lake parks runs from May until October, with July and August bringing the warmest weather, the longest daylight, and the busiest weekends, especially at lakes with sandy beaches like Beaver Lake and the islands at Sir Winston Churchill. Shoulder seasons are quieter but require more planning. At Ironwood Lake, services and maintenance are reduced after the September long weekend; the campground remains open after Thanksgiving in October, but there is no snow removal or services provided, so visitors should prepare to be self-sufficient and camp at their own risk. Free firewood is available seasonally from mid-May to mid-September, on a first-come, first-served basis. Water systems often turn on later in May: non-potable water is the norm at Ironwood and Touchwood through the early-season start-up, so visitors arriving in late May should bring sufficient water for the duration of their stay. Wildfire smoke and road washouts can affect access in summer and after heavy rains, so check Alberta Parks advisories before leaving home.

Expect quiet, lake-focused boreal camping rather than full-service resorts. Services vary widely. Garner Lake facilities include basic and power campsites, shower facilities, a boat launch, fish cleaning stands, potable water, picnic shelters, and a sewage dumping area. Beaver Lake has 15 full-service power, water, and sewer sites, 60 power-only sites, and 15 unserviced sites, with a shower house, store, boat launch, beach, drinking water, and accessible washrooms. Touchwood Lake has 93 campsites for RVs and tents with no RV hookups, plus a boat launch, fish-cleaning stations, firepits, pit and vault toilets, a playground, and sewage disposal. Cell service is patchy once off the main highways. Bring drinking water for the more remote Lakeland sites, expect biting insects from late May through August, and watch for black bears and moose on access roads at dawn and dusk.
