Campgrounds and RV parks near Bella Coola 1, BC

The valley is built around salmon and trout fishing on the Bella Coola and Atnarko rivers, grizzly and black bear viewing, and hiking. Bailey Bridge Campsite and Cabins sits on the Bella Coola River with river access, and is a practical base for exploring valley trails. Bella Coolas Eagle Lodge works well for touring the townsite and the ferry terminal. Inside Tweedsmuir Park (South), trails lead into the Rainbow Range alpine and toward Hunlen Falls, and Fisheries Pool - Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park has a car-top boat launch onto the Atnarko. The Belarko Wildlife Viewing Area, about 3 km past Fisheries Pool, operates a fenced bear-viewing platform in September, staffed by BC Parks and Nuxalk personnel.

The camping season is short. Fisheries Pool inside Tweedsmuir Park (South) typically operates from mid-June to mid-October, and the nearby Atnarko campground runs on a tighter window that closes in mid-August. Private valley campgrounds around Hagensborg generally follow the same late-spring to early-fall pattern, driven by river levels, road conditions on 'the Hill,' and salmon runs. Late summer and September are peak weeks because of the bear-viewing season on the Atnarko. The Belarko viewing platform is staffed in September, with additional area closures from September 1 to October 15 covering the Esker Trail from Stuix to Fisheries Pool Campground and the Smoke Hole access to the Atnarko. Plan campsite dates around those closures if bear viewing is the goal. Winter shuts most vehicle camping down. Park gates at Tweedsmuir close, and access up the plateau relies on Highway 20 remaining passable over the steep grades of the Hill. Cross-country skiing trails and a small tow rope operated by the Tweedsmuir Ski Club run from the Rainbow Range trailhead.

The drive in is the trip's biggest planning factor. Highway 20 from Williams Lake mixes paved and gravel sections and takes roughly four and a half to six hours to reach the park, and 'the Hill' between Heckman Pass and Atnarko drops more than 1,200 metres in about 16 km with grades up to 18 percent. Descend slowly and stop to rest brakes. Expect a bear-active valley. The Atnarko and Bella Coola corridors are prime grizzly and black bear habitat, so bear-aware food storage is required and some park areas close seasonally to protect wildlife. Pit toilets are standard at Tweedsmuir, with flush toilets and a sani-station near Atnarko campground. Services are thin. The closest store to Fisheries Pool is roughly 50 km away in Hagensborg, so stock up before leaving town.
