Campgrounds and RV parks near Kitamaat 2, BC

Fishing drives most trips here. The Kitimat River is known for chinook, coho, and steelhead runs, and Radley Park Campground puts anglers directly on the water with a boat launch and free sani-dump on site. Lakelse Lake adds trout and Dolly Varden, plus swimming from sandy beaches, paddling on the lake, and short interpretive walks through old-growth coastal forest of cedar, hemlock, and Sitka spruce. Day trips out of Kitamaat Village include boat access down the Douglas Channel toward the Kitlope, wildlife viewing along the fjord, and visits to nearby hot springs south of the community. The Radley Park site itself is a working riverside park with a large picnic area and a covered gathering shelter. Hiking options range from easy trails at Gruchy's Beach and the Twin Spruce Trail at Lakelse Lake to longer routes in the surrounding Kitimat Range.

The camping season in this corner of British Columbia is short and weather-driven. Radley Park Campground opens online booking on April 1, with sites available from May 15 to September 16, weather dependent. Radley Park is owned and operated by the District of Kitimat from the beginning of May to October each year. Lakelse Lake Provincial Park's Furlong Bay Campground runs on a similar mid-May to mid-September pattern, with reduced services in shoulder months. Summer, from late June through August, is peak season. Days are long, temperatures are mild rather than hot, and salmon runs build through July and August. Bookings on the BC Parks system and at Radley Park fill quickly for weekends and long weekends. Fall brings very heavy rain, especially in October and November, and most private and municipal sites shut down for winter. Snowshoeing on existing trails and skating on Lakelse Lake are possible in winter when conditions allow, and cross-country skiing is available at the Onion Lake ski trails south of the park. Full-service RV camping is essentially unavailable from November through March.

Expect a small-town, working-coast feel rather than a resort scene. Kitimat itself is an industrial community, and the highway corridor is quiet outside peak fishing weekends. Cell coverage is generally good in Kitimat and Terrace but patchy between towns and near lakeshore campgrounds. Radley Park offers universal washroom and shower facilities, a boat launch, electrical sites, a free sani-dump, and firewood. At Lakelse Lake, Furlong Bay has 30-amp electric hookups at many sites, a sani-dump available during peak season, and modern restrooms, showers, and potable water spigots throughout the campground. Hose hookups for RVs are not provided. Bears are active in the valley, so standard food storage rules apply. Sites at Furlong Bay are back-in and separated by mature spruce and fir, giving decent privacy but requiring some care with larger rigs.
