Campgrounds and RV parks near Telkwa, BC

Tyhee Lake Provincial Park is the main day-use hub. Common activities in this park are hiking, swimming, canoeing, and fishing, and the park features a day-use beach with a graded trail and roll-out mobility mat that provide access to the shore. The Aldermere trail offers a local hike through aspen forest along the lake. Anglers head to the Bulkley River for steelhead and to Babine Lake, where there are burbot and a variety of trout species. Paddlers can launch canoes and kayaks on Tyhee Lake, and paddle board rentals are available at the beach through the summer. In winter, ice fishing and cross-country skiing are popular activities, and nearby Hudson Bay Mountain adds downhill skiing options within a short drive of Telkwa.

The camping season in the Bulkley Valley is short. Provincial park sites around Telkwa typically operate from mid-May through the end of September, with peak demand from late June through mid-August when Tyhee Lake's beach and swimming area are in full use. Spring arrives late at this latitude, and gravel roads to remote sites like Smithers Landing can stay soft or snow-covered into May. Summer days are long and generally comfortable, though smoke from interior wildfires can affect air quality in July and August. Fall brings cool nights, fewer bugs, and salmon activity on Babine Lake: bald eagles are quite common in the fall when the salmon start spawning. Winter closes most services. Tyhee Lake shifts to day use for ice fishing and skiing, and gravel roads to remote lake sites are not maintained for RV travel. Rental RVs are best suited to the June-through-September window when campgrounds are fully open and highway conditions are reliable.

Tyhee Lake is the most developed nearby option. The park has 59 campsites (38 with electricity), hot showers, flush toilets, a sani-dump, playground, little kids bike park, picnic shelter, boat launch, mooring float, and a walk-in tenting groupsite. RV length limit at the campground is 32 ft (10 m), however, RV campers who have larger rigs can call ahead to find out if space is available. A gate is located at the entrance of the park and is locked from 11:00 pm to 7:00am daily. Smithers Landing is the opposite experience. This park has pit toilets, no flush toilets. Eight small, rustic and shaded campsites are available at this park. Come self-contained: no hookups, no potable water, and long gravel road access. Bears and moose are active across the region, so use food caches or lockers and keep sites clean.
