North Coast D is the regional district electoral area covering the unincorporated communities of Graham Island in Haida Gwaii, including Tlell, Lawnhill, Port Clements, Nadu, and Tow Hill, along with the First Nations communities of Skidegate and Old Massett. The area sits on the eastern side of Graham Island, facing Hecate Strait, and takes in the full length of Naikoon Provincial Park. RV travellers reach the area by BC Ferries from Prince Rupert to Skidegate, then follow Highway 16 north through Tlell and Port Clements to Masset. The drive from the ferry terminal to Masset is roughly 100 kilometres of paved road, with fuel, groceries, and marine supplies concentrated in Masset, Port Clements, and Daajing Giids. Full-service RV options in the area are limited. Hidden Island RV and Campground on Tow Hill Road near Masset bills itself as Haida Gwaii's largest fully serviced RV park, and most other camping in the district is provided by BC Parks sites within Naikoon Provincial Park or by small community-run campgrounds along the highway.

Things to do near North Coast D

Naikoon Provincial Park is the main draw, with about 100 kilometres of beach along the north and east coasts of Graham Island. Beachcombing for agates, driftwood, and Japanese glass floats is a standard activity, particularly after winter storms. Tow Hill, a basalt outcrop about 109 metres high on North Beach, has a short trail to a viewpoint over the beach and, on clear days, Alaska. The Pesuta Shipwreck Trail from the Tlell River day-use area is a 6-kilometre one-way hike through old-growth forest to the remains of a log barge beached in 1928 on East Beach. It is best walked on a receding tide. Other options include birdwatching near Masset and along Rose Spit, razor clam digging at low tide on North Beach, saltwater fishing charters out of Masset, and cultural sites in Old Massett and Skidegate.

Fees at the two BC Parks campgrounds within Naikoon Provincial Park are collected from May to September, and campground hosts are typically on site during the summer months. Outside that window the park stays open but services drop off, seasonal potable water is shut down, and no fees apply. June through August is peak season. Days are long, with roughly 17 hours of daylight around the solstice, and the summer salmon and halibut fisheries draw visitors from across the province. Fog and cool onshore winds are common even during warm stretches, and full waterproof gear is recommended year-round. Winter and early spring bring frequent Pacific storms, heavy rain, and strong southeast winds; Masset has recorded gusts to 160 km/h. Roads stay open, but ferry sailings from Prince Rupert can be cancelled by weather, and many private operators and services close between October and April.

How to book campgrounds near North Coast D

Book the BC Ferries sailing between Prince Rupert and Skidegate well in advance. RV space is limited and summer sailings fill months ahead. Reservations are made through BC Ferries directly. Hidden Island RV and Campground takes reservations by phone and email through the operator, and reservations are highly recommended during the summer. The BC Parks campgrounds within Naikoon Provincial Park do not accept reservations. Sites are first come, first served, and only cash is accepted at the park campgrounds. Small community-run sites elsewhere in the electoral area typically operate on a first-come basis during their posted season. Confirm hours locally before arrival, as staffing and dump-station availability vary by month.

What to expect

This is a remote destination. Naikoon Park is a wilderness area with no supplies inside its boundaries, and accommodation and services in surrounding communities are limited. Fuel is available in Masset, Port Clements, and near Skidegate, but stations keep short hours and cards are not always accepted, so carry cash. Cell coverage is spotty outside the main villages, and there is no internet access at the Naikoon Park campgrounds. Hidden Island RV and Campground offers Wi-Fi on site. Bring rain gear, warm layers, and insect repellent regardless of the forecast. ATVs and 4x4 vehicles are permitted only on North Beach and East Beach within Naikoon, and running unlicensed ATVs on Tow Hill Road or other highways carries a substantial fine. Respect signed cultural sites and the sand-dune closures marked by BC Parks and the Haida Nation.
