Campgrounds and RV parks near Masset, BC

The main draw is Naikoon Provincial Park. Tow Hill, a basalt-column outcrop about 100 metres high, rises above North Beach and is reached by a boardwalk-and-stair trail that is universally accessible to the blowhole lookout. On clear days visitors can see across Dixon Entrance toward the Alaskan coast. Beachcombing along North Beach turns up agates, shells, and driftwood, especially after storms. Digging for razor clams at low tide on North Beach is a classic Haida Gwaii activity. Sport fishing for salmon and halibut out of Masset harbour is a major draw, and the Hiellen, Sangan, and Chown rivers all offer freshwater fishing inside the park. Rose Spit, at the northeast tip of Graham Island, is a well-known migratory bird viewpoint on the Pacific Flyway, with sandhill cranes and shorebirds gathering after nesting in the park bogs.

The most reliable season for outdoor activities is June through August, when weather is most favourable and daylight is longest, with over 17 hours around the solstice. This is also peak season, and planning ahead is essential, particularly for BC Ferries vehicle space between Prince Rupert and Skidegate. July and August bring the warmest temperatures and the best odds of dry beach days. Salmon and halibut charters are busiest during this window. Spring and early fall are shoulder seasons. May is typically the driest month, and August tends to have the most sunshine, though nights cool quickly by September. Migratory birds gather at Rose Spit in spring and fall. The off-season, particularly October through February, brings heavy rainfall and strong winds, with gusts recorded to 160 km/h. Storm-watching is popular, but sea conditions turn severe fast. Naikoon Provincial Park itself is open year-round, though fees are collected from May through September, and services at the park campgrounds are seasonal.

Masset is remote. Naikoon is a wilderness area with no supplies of any kind, and accommodation in nearby communities is limited, so RV travellers should provision fully in Masset before heading down Tow Hill Road. The Naikoon campgrounds have no hookups, so filling water and fuel in town beforehand is advised. Potable water is available seasonally at Agate Beach and Misty Meadows and year-round at BC Parks Headquarters in Tlell. Cell coverage is spotty and there is no internet access at either Naikoon campground. Weather changes quickly. The climate is mild and moderated by Pacific air, but cool, rainy, or foggy weather and high winds can occur at any time, so warm clothing and wet-weather gear are essential year-round. On beaches and headlands, watch tides and weather closely, since rising tides and heavy seas can isolate walkers on sand bars.
