Campgrounds and RV parks near Kimberley, BC

Outdoor activity drives most trips. The paved North Star Rails to Trails path runs roughly 28 kilometres between Kimberley and Cranbrook and is popular for cycling and e-biking, with singletrack networks branching off above town. The St. Mary River is a well-known fly-fishing destination running past Kimberley Riverside Campground, and St. Mary Lake, west of town, adds paddling and swimming. Families use Kimberley Nature Park, one of the largest municipal parks in Canada, for hiking directly from the townsite. Wasa Lake is known as the warmest swimming lake in the Kootenays, with buoyed swim areas, a boat launch, waterskiing, and windsurfing. Golf, Fort Steele Heritage Town, and the ski runs at Kimberley Alpine Resort round out the options.

Peak camping season runs from mid-May through mid-September, aligning with the operating windows of the major nearby parks. Kimberley Riverside Campground operates from April 15 to October 15, while Wasa Lake Provincial Park runs full services from May 16 to September 30, after which the gate is closed and only self-sufficient walk-in use is permitted. Jimsmith Lake typically opens for camping from mid-May to mid-September. July and August bring the warmest, driest conditions and the busiest campgrounds. Wildfire smoke can affect the East Kootenays in late summer, so travellers should monitor BC Wildfire Service advisories and campfire bans before arriving. June is typically the wettest month in the Cranbrook area, with grassland wildflowers peaking around Wasa. Shoulder-season trips in May and September usually have better site availability, cooler nights, and reduced services at provincial parks. Winter transforms the region into a ski, snowshoe, and skate destination centred on Kimberley Alpine Resort and the Nordic trails, though most RV campgrounds close or run limited services.

Site standards vary widely. Kimberley Riverside Campground offers full hookups, 15/30/50-amp service, pull-through sites, laundry, showers, a heated outdoor pool, a sani-dump, and Wi-Fi at hotspot locations, and is big-rig friendly. Cranbrook/St. Eugene KOA Journey and Mount Baker RV Park offer similar serviced amenities suited to larger RVs. Provincial parks are more rustic. Jimsmith Lake has no hookups, pit toilets, and an RV length limit around 32 feet, and prohibits power boats on the lake. Wasa Lake has flush toilets, hot showers, a sani-station, a playground, and a boat launch, but sites are unserviced. Both parks allow pets on leash. Expect black bears and other wildlife across the region. Store food securely, follow posted fire restrictions, and check for boil-water advisories at Wasa Lake before filling RV tanks.
