Campgrounds near Nak'azdli
Nak'azdli Whut'en sits on the shores of Nak'al Bun (Stuart Lake), adjacent to the town of Fort St. James in north-central British Columbia. The community lies less than a two-hour drive northwest of Prince George, reached by Highway 16 west to Vanderhoof and then about 55 kilometres north on Highway 27. RV travellers use the area as a lakeshore base for fishing, boating, and exploring the fur-trade history preserved at the national historic site.
Stuart Lake anchors the local camping scene. It is one of the largest natural lakes in the province at roughly 70 kilometres long, and the southernmost in the Stuart-Trembleur-Takla chain. Two BC Parks campgrounds sit on the south shore within a short drive of each other: Paarsens Beach Provincial Park and Sowchea Bay Provincial Recreational Area. Both are basic, lake-facing sites without hookups.
For travellers who want serviced sites or a shorter drive to town, Riverside RV Park and Campground and the Coachlight Inn Motel offer private-sector options in and around Fort St. James, while Finger Lake Wilderness Resort provides a more remote, off-highway backcountry-style stay to the west.
Things to do near Nak'azdli
Water dominates the itinerary. Rainbow trout, lake char, Dolly Varden, kokanee, and burbot (ling cod) are all taken from Stuart Lake, which opens onto 180 kilometres of connected fishing water through the Stuart-Trembleur-Takla chain. Boat launches at Paarsens Beach Provincial Park and Sowchea Bay Provincial Recreational Area give direct lake access, and the long lake supports water skiing, tubing, canoeing, and windsurfing when conditions are favourable. Boaters should watch for sudden heavy winds that can turn the surface into dangerous whitecaps.
On land, the standout hike is Mount Pope. From the 1,472-metre summit, the panoramic view takes in Fort St. James, Stuart Lake, and the snow-capped Omineca Mountains to the north. Families can also spend a half-day at the Fort St. James National Historic Site, which preserves original fur-trade buildings and offers Indigenous-led programming interpreting Dakelh culture and history.

The camping window here is short. Most parks in this region do not officially open until late May, once the snow has melted and the ice is gone from the lakes, and fees are typically collected from May to September. Both Sowchea Bay and Paarsens Beach close in the off-season, when water taps are shut off and services end.
Summer is the core season. July and August bring the warmest, driest weather and the busiest lakefront sites, with the limited waterfront spots filling first. Travellers aiming for statutory-holiday long weekends should book as far ahead as the reservation system allows.
Shoulder season brings tradeoffs. Late May and early June offer open sites and cooler paddling, but biting insects and unsettled weather are common, and lake levels can be high enough in late spring to flood parts of Sowchea Bay. September cools quickly and lake levels drop, exposing large rocks near the boat ramps that boaters should watch for. Winter closes the provincial campgrounds entirely, and access roads see snow and ice.
How to book a campsite
Provincial park sites are handled through one system. All campsite reservations must be made through the BC Parks reservations system, and when reservations are not available all campsites function as first-come, first-served. At Paarsens Beach Provincial Park, a portion of the 39 vehicle-accessible sites are reservable and the rest are walk-up. Sowchea Bay Provincial Recreational Area works the same way: the park offers 30 smaller vehicle-accessible campsites, 12 reservable and 18 available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Private campgrounds such as Riverside RV Park and Campground and Finger Lake Wilderness Resort are booked directly with the operator by phone or website. Reserve well ahead for July and August weekends, and confirm rig-length limits: provincial sites here are generally sized for RVs and trailers up to about 32 feet, and larger sites may be available on request.
What to expect on-site
Expect rustic, unserviced provincial-park camping on Stuart Lake. Sites are basic but well-maintained, with no electrical, water, or sewer hookups. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, cold-water taps are located throughout the parks in summer, and pit toilets are provided. There is no dump station at either provincial park, but one can be found in Fort St. James, and Wi-Fi is not available and cell reception is limited.
Site layouts vary. Sowchea Bay was once a Forest Service recreation site, its layout is not BC Parks standard, and larger RVs may have difficulty maneuvering. Wildlife is active in the area, including black bears, moose, and deer, so store food securely and keep pets leashed. Private parks in town offer hookups, showers, and easier big-rig access.
