Water is the main draw. The Red River runs the length of the municipality and feeds into Lake Winnipeg at Netley-Libau Marsh, a large freshwater coastal marsh and well-known birding area. Selkirk is nicknamed the Catfish Capital of Canada, and shore fishing, boat launches, and guided charters are all available within a short drive. Birds Hill Provincial Park adds 30 kilometres of trails for walking, hiking and cross-country skiing, plus a 7.2 kilometre paved bicycle and rollerblading trail, along with a lake beach, riding stable, and interpretive programs. Splash pads, playgrounds, and a pool at Selkirk Park make the area workable for families travelling with kids.

The camping season here is short and clearly defined. Most campgrounds open in early May and close by Thanksgiving in October, and winter RV camping is not offered locally. Selkirk Park Campground opens in mid-May and closes to camping in early October, and is not available for winter camping. Birds Hill Provincial Park runs from late April or early May to Thanksgiving, weather dependent. Chesleys Family Resort operates from May 1st through to the first weekend of October. July and August are the busiest months. Warm lake water, long daylight hours, and festival traffic push sites to capacity, especially on weekends. Every July the park hosts the Winnipeg Folk Festival at Birds Hill, which fills nearby campgrounds well in advance. Late May, June, and September are quieter shoulder periods. Bugs ease off after mid-August, and fall brings cool nights and easier reservations. Frost typically returns in late September, so shoulder-season RVers should plan for freezing overnight lows.

Terrain is flat to gently rolling prairie with pockets of aspen and oak forest. Sites range from basic unserviced pads to full hookups. At Birds Hill, 174 sites offer electric hookups only, while 45 sites offer electric, water, and sewage hookups, with the remainder unserviced. Selkirk Park has 165 camping sites, 135 with power, and access to water is shared for all sites. Cell coverage is generally good given the proximity to Winnipeg. Expect mosquitoes from late May through July, especially near the marshes and creek. Dump stations are standard at the larger parks, and firewood is typically sold on site. Weekends can be lively at the municipal and resort campgrounds, with family events running through the summer. Travellers looking for quieter stays should target midweek dates or shoulder-season nights.
