Campgrounds and RV parks near Conception Harbour, NL

The harbour itself is a draw. Its sheltered waters hold several shipwrecks, including remains of old whaling vessels visible near the surface, which makes the harbour a popular site for kayaking and scuba diving. In town, families can walk to the Overfalls waterfall, picnic at Big Pond, or use the local ballfield, basketball court, and playground. At Butter Pot Provincial Park, activity centres on the trail network and the ponds. Eight kilometers of scenic hiking trails navigate through wooded terrain and open landscapes, culminating at Butter Pot Hill, which offers panoramic views of all major water bodies and surrounding terrain. Big Otter Pond is the largest pond in the park and perfect for canoeing. Big Otter Pond is also the closest park pond to the campground and offers two beaches. Brook trout fishing and birdwatching round out the summer options.

The RV season on the Avalon is short and weather-driven. Most provincial and private campgrounds run from spring through early fall. The campground itself is open from mid-May through mid-September. Private parks in the Conception Bay area follow a similar pattern, with some opening slightly earlier in May and closing in October depending on conditions. July and August are the warmest and busiest months. During July, August and September, St. John's experiences its most favorable weather, with temperatures between 17°C and 20°C. These mild conditions make it an excellent time for a visit. Fog, wind, and quick weather changes are common year-round on the Avalon coast, so layered clothing and weather-tight gear matter. Late summer and early fall carry an added risk factor. From August to October, the island of Newfoundland can occasionally be hit by hurricanes of the Atlantic, which, after affecting the Caribbean, turn north-east. They generally arrive weakened because they have to cross a cold sea, however they can still bring abundant rains and strong winds. Trip planners should watch tropical forecasts in September and early October and be ready to shift dates.

Butter Pot is a rustic-style provincial park. Sites are primitive, with no water, electric or sewage hookups. Two wheelchair accessible comfort stations with showers and laundry facilities are located within the camping area with a trailer dumping station near the park staff cabin. Water taps and outhouses are located throughout the park. The provincial park sports a sizable campground, with 175 sites in total. Most sites can accommodate trailers and RVs, and many can accommodate even large rigs. Dogs must be leashed and be sure to clean up after your pet. Private parks in the Conception Bay area generally offer more services, including electrical hookups and, at some, water and sewer. Cell coverage is reliable near the harbour and along Highway 1, but drops out on interior trails and secondary roads. Expect gravel access roads, wooded sites with uneven ground, and cool nights even in July. Blackflies and mosquitoes peak in June and early July; screens and repellent help. Anglers need the appropriate provincial licence, available at most convenience stores.
