Campgrounds and RV parks near North River, NL

The Conception Bay shoreline is the main draw. Whale and iceberg watching from viewpoints and boat tours out of nearby harbours peak from late spring into midsummer, and Bay Roberts, Brigus, and Cupids offer historic waterfronts within easy driving distance. Hiking is a strong reason to base an RV in the area. Butter Pot Provincial Park has a trail network with an ascent to Butter Pot Hill, a rounded summit that gives long views over the boreal forest and barrens of the Avalon interior. Big Otter Pond and Peter's Pond inside the park are used for canoeing, swimming, and brook-trout fishing. St. John's, Cape Spear, and Signal Hill are all within day-trip range for travellers who want to combine campground stays with city and coastal sightseeing.

The camping season on the Avalon Peninsula is short. Butter Pot Provincial Park is open from mid-May to mid-September, and most other provincial camping parks in Newfoundland and Labrador open around the Victoria Day weekend, with some following in late May and early June. Private parks in the North River area generally follow a similar window, though exact dates vary by operator. July and August are the warmest and busiest months, and provincial park sites at Butter Pot fill on virtually every weekend during peak season. Fog is common along the coast through spring and early summer, and the St. John's area is one of the foggiest places in Canada. Late summer and early fall bring the tail end of the Atlantic hurricane season. Storms that reach Newfoundland are usually weakened after crossing cold water, but they can still deliver heavy rain and strong wind, so travellers watching a named system should check park conditions before arrival.

Butter Pot has 175 campsites laid out along forested loops near Big Otter Pond and Peter's Pond. Each site has a picnic table and a fireplace, and most can accommodate larger RVs. Facilities include comfort stations with showers and flush toilets, laundry, drinking water, a dump station, a swimming area, and a playground. Access is straightforward for towed and drivable rigs. The park sits directly off the Trans-Canada Highway, and the access road is short and paved. Holyrood, a short drive west, is the closest town for groceries, fuel, and last-minute supplies. Dogs are allowed on leash at Butter Pot and other provincial parks. Open-fire restrictions can be imposed during dry stretches, so check current fire status before lighting a campfire.
