Campgrounds and RV parks near South River, NL

The Baccalieu Trail loops north from South River along Conception Bay, with lookouts, sea stacks, small harbours, and hiking paths connecting the coastal communities. Whale watching, iceberg spotting in late spring, and seabird colonies are common draws along this stretch of coast. Inland, Butter Pot Provincial Park offers 179 campsites in a forested area, with sites located along several forested loops just a short walk from either Big Otter Pond, Peter's Pond, or both. Big Otter Pond is the largest pond in the park and suited to canoeing, and the hike up Butter Pot Hill provides views over the surrounding wetlands and scenery. Wildlife around the park includes moose, foxes, bats, and chipmunks. St. John's is within day-trip range for Signal Hill, Cape Spear, and the downtown waterfront, giving RV travellers a mix of quiet coastal camping and city outings from a single base.

The Newfoundland camping season is short. Most provincial camping parks are scheduled to open for the Victoria Day weekend, with others opening in late May and early June. The Butter Pot campground itself is open from mid-May through mid-September, and private parks in the South River area generally follow a similar late-spring through early-fall window. Summer weekends fill quickly. The park's numerous camping and picnic sites are often filled every summer weekend, so mid-week arrivals and advance bookings are the safer plan for July and August. Icebergs drift down the Labrador Current along the north and east coasts through spring and early summer, and some run aground in shallow bays and remain for weeks. Shoulder-season travel brings fewer crowds but more variable weather. St. John's is the foggiest city in Canada, and coastal fog, wind, and rain can arrive on any day of the season. Winter closes most campgrounds, though the park has cross-country ski trails and snowshoe areas for visitors to enjoy on even the snowiest days.

Roads into the South River area are paved and manageable for larger rigs, and access to Butter Pot Provincial Park is straightforward. Highway 1 avoids steep or winding stretches near the park, and the park's access road is short, paved, and well maintained. Each Butter Pot campsite features a picnic table, fireplace, and space for a vehicle, with many able to accommodate larger RVs. Water taps and outhouses are located throughout the park, and two wheelchair accessible comfort stations with showers and laundry facilities are located within the camping area, with a trailer dumping station near the park staff cabin. Dogs are welcome in all provincial parks, and Butter Pot is no exception. Expect changeable coastal weather, cell coverage that thins outside main highways, and cool evenings even at the height of summer. Pack layers, rain gear, and bug protection.
