Campgrounds near Athens, Ontario
Athens is a small village in Leeds and Grenville County, southeastern Ontario, positioned between the Rideau Lakes to the north and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands region to the south. RV travellers use it as a base for the Frontenac Arch, an extension of the Canadian Shield that shapes the lakes, granite ridges, and forests in every direction.
The closest full-service option is Pleasure Park Campground and RV Resort, followed by Charleston Lake Provincial Park, a natural-environment park run by Ontario Parks near Lansdowne. South toward Highway 401, 1000 Islands / Mallorytown KOA Holiday sits close to the 1000 Islands Parkway. To the north, Lower Beverley Lake Township Park offers waterfront camping in the village of Delta, within the Township of Rideau Lakes.
Across the international border in the St. Lawrence River, Cedar Island State Park adds a boat-access option in the Thousand Islands. Together these campgrounds cover front-country RV sites, tent camping, roofed accommodation, and primitive island sites, so trip planners can match the type of stay to the vehicle and the group travelling.
Things to do near Athens
Water dominates the area. Charleston Lake is a deep, island-dotted lake used for swimming, paddling, and fishing, with canoe and kayak rentals available seasonally at the Discovery Centre. The lake supports lake trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, black crappie, and yellow perch, and anglers need a valid Ontario fishing licence.
Hiking is strong across the Frontenac Arch. Trails at Charleston Lake include a lookout from Blue Mountain, the high point of the former Leeds County, and the park runs a Discovery Centre with Natural Heritage Education programming. South of Athens, the 1000 Islands Parkway follows the St. Lawrence with a paved cycling path and access to the Aquatarium in Brockville, plus Thousand Islands boat cruises out of Gananoque and Rockport.

The camping season in this part of Ontario is short and busy. Charleston Lake Provincial Park operates day-use, front-country camping, and roofed accommodation from early May to mid-October, with backcountry sites open on a similar window. Lower Beverley Lake Township Park runs from the Friday of Mother's Day weekend in May through Thanksgiving weekend in October. Cedar Island State Park in New York typically opens for camping from late May through Labour Day.
July and August are peak season. Weekends and long weekends at the provincial park and the KOA fill fastest, and reservable Ontario Parks sites open up to five months before the arrival date. Spring and early fall are cooler but quieter, with better site selection and fewer bugs after Labour Day.
Winter closes most front-country campgrounds. Roads stay open, but snow, ice, and freezing temperatures make RV travel impractical outside of a few private parks that hold winter sites.

How to book campsites near Athens
Ontario Parks handles Charleston Lake reservations through its central online system and call centre. Campsite-specific reservations open up to five months in advance of the arrival date, at 7:00 a.m. ET, and backcountry permits are required for interior sites. Four yurts sit in the Shady Ridge Campground and book through the same system under Roofed Accommodation.
The 1000 Islands / Mallorytown KOA Holiday books directly through the KOA website or by phone with the campground. Lower Beverley Lake Township Park takes bookings through the operator directly, and Pleasure Park Campground and RV Resort books through its own office.
Cedar Island State Park is reserved through the New York State Parks system on ReserveAmerica up to nine months out. Sites are boat-access only, with no bridge or ferry, so factor watercraft into the plan. Public boat launches at Chippewa Bay are the usual mainland starting point.
What to expect on the ground
Sites vary widely. The KOA offers full-hookup pull-throughs, cabins, and typical KOA amenities such as a pool and playground. Charleston Lake spreads more than 230 sites across four campgrounds, Bayside, Shady Ridge, Meadowlands, and Fallows, with a mix of electrical and non-electrical sites, some near the water and others set back in mixed forest. Four comfort stations serve the front-country loops.
Lower Beverley Lake Township Park sits on 106 acres of mixed forest with 235 trailer and tent sites, 11 cottages, and 2 bunkies, plus laundry, showers, and a swim area. Expect gravel pads and a family-focused atmosphere.
Cell coverage is generally decent at Charleston Lake's main campground and along the 401 corridor. Cedar Island is primitive: pack water, plan for weather, and remember all gear must be moved by boat. Black flies and mosquitoes peak in late May and June across the region.
