Water activity drives most trips. The Trent-Severn Waterway runs through the region, giving boaters and paddlers a connected route with branches into countless side lakes. Emily Provincial Park sits on Pigeon Lake and is popular with anglers targeting walleye, muskie, and largemouth and smallmouth bass. On land, the park has walking trails and marsh boardwalks, and the wider Kawarthas offer rail-trail cycling and short hiking loops. Peterborough, a short drive northeast, adds groceries, restaurants, the Canadian Canoe Museum, and the Peterborough Lift Lock for a half-day break from the campsite.

The camping season in this part of Ontario is tightly seasonal. Emily Provincial Park operates from early May to mid-October, and most private RV resorts near Peterborough run on a similar May-through-October window, with some transitioning to seasonal-only sites in the shoulder months. Outside that window, the region receives significant snowfall and most facilities close, drain water lines, and lock gates. July and August are the busiest months. Ontario Parks releases bookings on a rolling five-month window that opens at 7:00 a.m. ET, and popular waterfront sites at Emily are often claimed the moment they open. Long weekends, especially Victoria Day, Canada Day, and the August civic holiday, sell out first. Late spring brings blackflies and mosquitoes, particularly near wetlands and river campsites, so bring repellent. September offers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong fall colour through the Kawarthas, which the park promotes as a highlight of the shoulder season. Fishing remains productive well into fall, subject to Ontario's seasonal regulations.

Emily Provincial Park has roughly 300 sites, with about 170 offering electricity, and includes a handful of pull-through sites suitable for larger RVs. A dump station is located near the park entrance by the office and gatehouse. The park has two boat launches on Pigeon Lake, docks, a swim beach, playgrounds, and a park store offering firewood, ice, and canoe and kayak rentals. Cedars Campground is tent-only and non-electrical, so RV travellers should book in the Hill, Circle, or Lookout campgrounds, which offer 15 and 30 amp electrical service. Private resorts in the area typically offer full or partial hookups, dump stations, showers, and water access. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Peterborough but can weaken on back roads southwest of the city, so download maps before leaving town.
