RV camping near Edwardsburgh/Cardinal, Ontario
Edwardsburgh/Cardinal is a township in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville in eastern Ontario, Canada, situated along the St. Lawrence River and extending north into rural hamlets. The township sits between Prescott and Morrisburg along Highway 401, roughly an hour south of Ottawa, which makes it a practical base for RV renters exploring the Upper St. Lawrence corridor and the 1000 Islands region to the west.
Campground options cluster along the river and into the countryside north of the 401. Cardinal / Ottawa South KOA Holiday and Wildwood Campground serve travellers looking for full-hookup private sites, while Sandy Mountain Camp and Golf adds golf-course access. Rideau River Provincial Park, roughly 45 minutes north near Kemptville, is the closest Ontario Parks property. Across the river in New York, Eel Weir State Park on the Oswegatchie River offers a quieter, state-run alternative reachable via the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge.
The waterfront features a historic windmill, an old canal system, and the village of Cardinal, dating back to the 1790s, which still shows heritage buildings and remnants of the historic Galop Canal.
Things to do around Edwardsburgh/Cardinal
The St. Lawrence River is the main draw. Cardinal is a popular spot for divers exploring sunken vessels, and the Cardinal Legion Waterfront Park offers a canteen and a scenic hard-packed cycling trail along the river. Anglers target bass, pike and walleye from shore launches and marinas along the seaway.
Heritage side trips are close at hand. Upper Canada Village recreates a rural Canadian community of the 1860s with heritage homes staffed by costumed interpreters, located east of Morrisburg about 20 minutes from Cardinal. The Battle of the Windmill National Historic Site sits just outside Prescott.
The area is about an hour from Ottawa, where Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal and the National Gallery of Canada are among the attractions. Cyclists can ride sections of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail directly from riverside campgrounds.

The camping season in this part of eastern Ontario runs roughly from mid-May through mid-October. Most private campgrounds, including Cardinal / Ottawa South KOA Holiday and Wildwood Campground, typically open around the Victoria Day long weekend in May and close after Canadian Thanksgiving in October. Rideau River Provincial Park follows a similar seasonal window under Ontario Parks operating dates.
July and August bring warm, humid days and the highest demand. Waterfront sites and full-hookup pads at the KOA and at Ontario Parks properties are typically the first to sell out, and long weekends should be booked months in advance. Bugs, especially mosquitoes and deer flies, are most active in June near wooded and wetland areas.
Shoulder-season trips in late May, early June and September deliver cooler nights, lighter crowds and easier availability. September is often the wettest month in this stretch of the St. Lawrence Valley, with roughly 98mm of rainfall, so RVers travelling then should plan for damp campsites and shorter daylight.

How to book a campsite
Cardinal / Ottawa South KOA Holiday, Wildwood Campground and Sandy Mountain Camp and Golf take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. The KOA is bookable through koa.com, which allows RVers to compare site types, add multiple stays to a single cart and hold dates online.
Rideau River Provincial Park is reserved through the Ontario Parks reservation service at reservations.ontarioparks.com, which opens a rolling five-month booking window at 7 a.m. ET on the date exactly five months before arrival. Popular summer weekends often fill the moment the window opens, so setting a calendar reminder for the exact opening date is recommended.
Eel Weir State Park, on the New York side, is booked through the New York State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica, which accepts bookings up to nine months in advance. Cross-border RV travellers should carry passports and check current customs rules before crossing the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Edwardsburgh/Cardinal is flat to gently rolling, which makes site leveling straightforward at most parks. Private campgrounds typically offer 30-amp and 50-amp electrical, water and sewer hookups, along with dump stations, laundry and Wi-Fi. Provincial and state parks lean more rustic, with electrical-only or unserviced sites and centralized comfort stations.
Cell coverage from Canadian carriers is generally strong along the 401 and river, though it thins in wooded interior sites. Grocery runs are handled in Prescott, Cardinal village or Kemptville, and larger big-box shopping is in Brockville to the west.
RVers should expect train noise near the river corridor, mosquitoes in early summer, and occasional strong thunderstorms in July and August. Fire bans can be issued during dry stretches, so check with the campground office at check-in.

twpec.ca/recreation-and-leisure/visiting-edwardsburgh-cardinal-and-tourism/What license do I need to rent an RV in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal, Ontario?
A regular full Class G driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal for almost every motorhome and trailer on RVezy. Ontario allows motorhomes under 11,000 kilograms (about 24,250 pounds) and most travel trailers to be driven on a standard Class G license without any RV endorsement. You'll generally need to be 25 or older as an approved driver, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform before pickup. Visiting from outside Canada? Your valid home-country license works for short visits, and an International Driving Permit is a smart backup. With paperwork sorted in minutes, you're free to focus on your Galop Canal sunset cruise plans.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Edwardsburgh/Cardinal RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets one consistent cancellation policy across every listing, including a full money-back grace period right after you book. After that window, refunds depend on how close you are to your trip start date, which is reassuring given Eastern Ontario's occasional summer thunderstorms and winter ice storms along the St. Lawrence. Cancellation rules are handled by RVezy directly, so you won't see different policies from listing to listing. Pro tip: lock in your campground reservations at the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary Campground or Cardinal/Ottawa South KOA at the same time you book your RV so your whole Edwardsburgh/Cardinal RV trip stays flexible together.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
Absolutely, your pup is welcome on the road. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly find a pet-friendly RV rental in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal, and message the host with your dog's size and breed to confirm any specifics. Parks of the St. Lawrence campgrounds, including the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary Campground and the Cardinal/Ottawa South KOA, welcome leashed dogs with cleanup expected. Pets are generally not allowed on the Sanctuary's interpretive trails, but you can walk the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail right through the park. Pro tip: the Cardinal Legion Waterfront Park is a great off-RV stretch-and-sniff stop along the river.
stlawrenceparks.com/to-do/camping/bird-sanctuary-campground/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal directly to campgrounds like the Cardinal/Ottawa South KOA on Pittston Road, the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary Campground near Ingleside, or a private driveway in Spencerville or Johnstown. Your host will level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system so you never have to back a trailer or fuss with a hitch. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your destination and dates for an exact quote. Pro tip: delivery is especially handy if you're flying into Ottawa (about an hour north) and want to skip renting a tow vehicle entirely.
stlawrenceparks.com/to-do/camping/bird-sanctuary-campground/How far can I travel from Edwardsburgh/Cardinal on a typical RV rental?
Cardinal's location right on Highway 401 makes it a perfect launchpad. From here you can reach Ottawa in about 1 hour (90 km), Kingston and the heart of the 1000 Islands in about 1 hour 15 minutes (130 km), Montreal in roughly 2 hours (200 km), and Algonquin Provincial Park in around 3.5 hours (320 km). Many hosts on RVezy offer 100 to 200 free kilometres per night, with extra distance available for $0.25 to $0.40 per kilometre. If you're planning a longer Edwardsburgh/Cardinal RV trip, filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage on RVezy. Pro tip: Parks of the St. Lawrence sites book up by January for July long weekends, so reserve early.
stlawrenceparks.com/to-do/camping/bird-sanctuary-campground/When is the best time to take an RV trip in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
The sweet spot is late May through early October, with July and August offering reliable highs of 25 to 28 degrees Celsius (77 to 82 Fahrenheit) and the busiest events along the St. Lawrence. June brings warm days around 22 to 25 degrees Celsius with fewer crowds and lower nightly rates, while September delivers spectacular fall foliage and overnight lows around 8 to 12 degrees Celsius (ideal for campfires). Most local campgrounds, including the KOA, run June through mid-October. Winters here drop to minus 15 Celsius or colder, so most RVs are off the road. Pro tip: book the second weekend of September to catch the colours along the Waterfront Trail with half the summer traffic.
canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/migratory-bird-sanctuaries/locations/upper-canada.htmlCan you rent an RV in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal during winter for cold-weather camping?
Yes, winter RVing is doable here. Some RVezy hosts in the Edwardsburgh/Cardinal area list four-season motorhomes with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces built for Eastern Ontario's cold January nights, which often drop to minus 15 to minus 25 degrees Celsius. Message the host directly to confirm winter-readiness, antifreeze in the lines, and shore-power capability for plug-in heating. While most local campgrounds close for the season in October, the Cardinal area is gorgeous in winter for ice fishing on the St. Lawrence, snowshoeing at Limerick Forest, or driving up to Calabogie for skiing. Pro tip: book a delivered RV parked on a private property with 30 amp power for the easiest winter experience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Edwardsburgh%2FCardinal%2C%20OntarioI've never rented an RV before in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal. Will I know what I'm doing?
You'll feel like a pro by the end of pickup day. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough covering the basics: how to extend the slides, run the propane fridge, dump the tanks, and connect to shore power. Most orientations in the Cardinal area take 30 to 45 minutes, and hosts hand you a written checklist plus their cell number for questions on the road. First time renting an RV? Start with a smaller Class C or travel trailer, book delivery to the Cardinal/Ottawa South KOA so setup is done for you, and plan a short first night within 30 minutes of pickup. Pro tip: take photos of the dashboard controls and propane shut-off locations during the walkthrough as a quick reference.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180073-Renting-an-RVWhat if something goes wrong with the RV on the road near Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. From Edwardsburgh/Cardinal, you're a short drive from major service centres in Brockville (about 25 km east) and Kemptville (about 35 km north), with Brockville General Hospital and Kemptville District Hospital both close at hand. Your host is also a phone call away for system-specific questions like resetting the generator or troubleshooting the water pump. Pro tip: before you pull out of the driveway, save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone favourites, then snap a photo of the RV's VIN and plate.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Edwardsburgh/Cardinal RV rental across the border into the United States?
Cross-border trips are often possible, and Cardinal is one of the closest Canadian RV launch points to the U.S. since the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge is just 15 minutes east. Many RVezy hosts allow travel into New York State (and onward to the Adirondacks, Lake Placid, or Vermont), but you must confirm directly with the host and ensure insurance coverage extends across the border. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Bring your passport, vehicle ownership documents from the host, and a signed cross-border travel letter (the host can provide this). Pro tip: a popular RV road trip from Edwardsburgh/Cardinal is the loop through the 1000 Islands, Watertown, and back via Wellesley Island State Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
Fuel is the biggest variable expense, but it's predictable here. Expect roughly 18 to 22 litres per 100 km for Class C motorhomes and 25 to 32 litres per 100 km for larger Class A units, while truck-and-travel-trailer combos sit around 20 litres per 100 km. With Ontario gas prices typically running $1.45 to $1.70 per litre, a 500 km loop to Ottawa, the 1000 Islands, and back to Cardinal usually costs $130 to $180 in fuel. The Shell and Esso stations at the Highway 401 Shanley Road and Cardinal/Johnstown interchanges have lanes wide enough for big rigs. Pro tip: fuel up in Prescott or Brockville before heading into smaller towns where prices can climb.
ontario.ca/page/gas-pricesHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
Book early for the best spots. Parks of the St. Lawrence (which runs the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary Campground and nine other sites along the river) opens reservations in early January through reservations.parksofthestlawrence.com, and waterfront sites for July and August weekends often sell out within days. The Cardinal/Ottawa South KOA accepts bookings at koa.com year-round and fills up fast for the Canada Day long weekend. For shoulder-season trips in June or September, three to four weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: if you strike out on July dates, try Sunday-to-Thursday stays at the Bird Sanctuary Campground, which often has cancellations and gives you 50 amp sites with St. Lawrence River views.
stlawrenceparks.com/to-do/camping/bird-sanctuary-campground/What are the driving conditions like around Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
Driving conditions are very RV-friendly. Highway 401 runs right past Cardinal with wide lanes, gentle grades, and four major exits (730 Shanley, 738 Cardinal/Johnstown, 750 and 758) that handle big rigs easily. County Road 2, the scenic riverfront route, has narrower shoulders and an 80 km/h speed limit with some truck traffic between Prescott and Cardinal, so take it slow and enjoy the views. Most local roads are flat farmland with no mountain passes. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially near Limerick Forest, and check 511on.ca for winter conditions if travelling November through March. Pro tip: avoid the 401 around 4 to 6 p.m. on Fridays when Ottawa-bound traffic backs up at the 416 interchange.
ontario.ca/page/driving-recreational-vehicle-rvWhat amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. The Cardinal/Ottawa South KOA offers 30 and 50 amp electric, water hookups, a swimming pool, playground, laundry, and Wi-Fi (note: no sewer at individual sites, but a dump station and on-site honey-wagon service for $20 are available). The Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary Campground has 10 newer sites with water and 50 amp, plus 27 sites with water and 30 amp, a dump station, and flush toilets. Potable water fills are available at most local campgrounds and at the Iroquois Lock area. Pro tip: pack a 50-foot drinking-water hose and a 30 amp to 15 amp adapter so you can fill and plug in at any site configuration.
stlawrenceparks.com/to-do/camping/bird-sanctuary-campground/What features come standard in RV rentals in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
Your motorhome rental in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal is essentially a home on wheels. Typical RVezy listings include a queen or king bed, dinette and sofa that convert to additional sleeping space (most rigs sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with propane stove, fridge, and microwave, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, and a TV. Many include awnings, outdoor speakers, BBQs, and generators for boondocking near the Galop Canal. Seatbelts are provided for the rated passenger count. Pro tip: filter for listings with built-in Wi-Fi or a cellular booster if you're working remotely from your campsite, since cell coverage along the St. Lawrence corridor is generally strong on Bell and Rogers networks.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Edwardsburgh%2FCardinal%2C%20OntarioWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts offer in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
Hosts make the trip easy with practical extras. Common add-ons on RVezy include kitchen and linen kits ($50 to $100 per trip), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($25 to $40), generator use ($15 to $25 per day), bike racks, and BBQ propane refills. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Cardinal, Spencerville, Johnstown, or nearby Prescott, with many hosts offering free delivery within a set radius and a per-kilometre charge beyond that. Mileage policies usually range from 100 km per night included up to unlimited. Pro tip: ask about delivery straight to the Cardinal/Ottawa South KOA or Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary Campground so you skip driving the rig entirely on day one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Edwardsburgh%2FCardinal%2C%20OntarioHow does the security deposit and payment work for an RV rental in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your campervan rental in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal on RVezy, you pay the full rental amount through the platform using a credit card. A separate refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Never pay hosts off-platform: keeping everything in RVezy is how your protection plan, support, and refund eligibility stay intact. Pro tip: do a thorough video walkaround with your host at both pickup and drop-off so deposit returns are quick and friction-free.
