Camping near Minden Hills, Ontario
Minden Hills sits in Ontario's Haliburton Highlands, a lake-and-forest region along the Gull River roughly two and a half hours northeast of Toronto. The village is a common base for RV renters exploring the southern edge of the Canadian Shield, with quick access to Kawartha Lakes country to the south and Algonquin Provincial Park to the north.
Campground options in the area range from private RV parks with full hookups to provincial park sites. Named options within driving distance include Rays Place, Buckslide Tent and Trailer Park, Trailer Park on the Bay, and Duck Lake RV Resort. For a larger public park experience, Balsam Lake Provincial Park is located in south-central Ontario on Balsam Lake, situated along the Trent-Severn Waterway a few kilometres southwest of Coboconk.
Most sites in the region are seasonal, with the core operating window running from spring thaw through mid-fall.
Things to do around Minden Hills
Water dominates the trip menu. The Gull River runs through the village and is a well-known whitewater training site, and dozens of lakes in the surrounding townships support fishing, paddling, and swimming. At Balsam Lake Provincial Park, canoes, kayaks and paddle boards are available to rent on the south end of the beach, with availability during shoulder seasons confirmed at the registration office, and personal flotation devices supplied for all rentals.
On land, hiking and cycling round out the options. Cyclists can ride campground roads and over 10 km of local cottage roads adjacent to the park, and birders can spot species ranging from hummingbirds and orioles to pileated woodpeckers, hawks, osprey and owls.
Families staying at Trailer Park on the Bay or Duck Lake RV Resort typically pair beach days with short drives to the village for groceries and the Minden Hills Cultural Centre.

The camping season is short and defined. The park operates seasonally from mid-May to the end of October, and private RV parks in the area often follow a similar window, opening once overnight temperatures reliably stay above freezing.
Summer is the peak. July and August bring warm lake temperatures, full concession hours, and the busiest weekends. Long weekends fill first, often booking as soon as the reservation window opens. Fall is quieter but popular with leaf-peepers, and October offers strong autumn colour views at Balsam Lake. The Canadian Thanksgiving weekend in October is a popular closing stretch for many campers.
Winter closes most drive-in RV camping. The park is closed in winter but is used for skiing and snowshoeing, so RV renters should plan trips between the May long weekend and mid-October.

Our Trailer rental from Pam and Mike was perfect. Immaculately clean, fully equipped with all the essentials, deluvered and picke up on time and perfectly situated to let us enjoy the park's stunning natural beauty. We spent our days hiking the beautiful trails and relaxing by the campfire, knowing we had a comfortable, warm bed waiting for us each night. How to book a site
Provincial park sites are booked through Ontario Parks. Reservations are accepted up to five months in advance of the arrival date, so for example a January 15 booking corresponds to a June 15 arrival. The online reservation system opens at 7:00 a.m. five months in advance of the first date of the trip, and reservations are also available through the call centre starting at 7:00 a.m.
Private campgrounds such as Rays Place, Buckslide Tent and Trailer Park, Trailer Park on the Bay, and Duck Lake RV Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Long weekends fill first, often months ahead.
Before arrival, confirm the site length, hookup type, and whether the campground allows generators.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of forested and open sites. Balsam Lake has campsites with and without electricity for tents and RVs, plus walk-in options for a more private experience. Private parks around Minden Hills tend to offer more serviced pull-throughs suited to larger rental RVs.
Check-in logistics are straightforward. The gatehouse doubles as a small park store during the shoulder season, where campers can pick up a printed map and purchase ice and firewood. Plan to stop at the gatehouse area to handle water fills and tank dumps before driving to the site.
Bring a fishing licence if planning to cast a line, insect repellent for early summer blackflies and mosquitoes, and layers for cool evenings even in July.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Minden Hills, ON
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Minden Hills, Ontario?
Great news for budget-friendly cottage country adventures: an RV rental in Minden Hills typically runs between $150 and $300 per night, depending on the size and season. Class B campervan rentals in Minden Hills tend to sit on the lower end (around $1,200 to $1,600 per week), while larger Class C motorhome rentals in Minden Hills usually fall in the $1,500 to $2,000 weekly range. Travel trailers can dip as low as $90 to $150 per night if you already have a tow vehicle. For a cheap RV rental in Minden Hills, book midweek in late May, June, or September when Haliburton Highlands cottage traffic thins out. Pro tip: prices spike during the Haliburton Forest fall colours peak (late September to mid-October), so lock in your dates early.
destinationontario.com/en-ca/articles/rving-ontario-for-beginnersWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Minden Hills, ON?
Good news for first-time RV renters in Minden Hills: a standard Ontario Class G driver's licence (or its equivalent from your home province, state, or country) is all you need for almost every RV on the RVezy platform. Ontario allows you to drive a motorhome up to 11,000 kg, or tow a trailer, with a regular Class G licence, which covers virtually every Class B, Class C, travel trailer, and most Class A rentals you'll find here. Approved RVezy renters are generally 25 or older. Visiting from outside Canada? Bring your home licence (an International Driving Permit is recommended if your licence isn't in English or French). ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform during booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Minden Hills covered if something goes wrong?
Yes, peace of mind is built right in. Every RV rental in Minden Hills booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. Protection helps cover damage to the vehicle during your trip, so a minor scrape on a tight Haliburton Highlands cottage road or a mishap at the dump station won't blindside your wallet. During checkout, you choose your preferred protection level (not the host), so you can match coverage to your comfort level. It gives you real financial protection and the confidence to enjoy your Minden Hills RV trip. Roadside assistance is included with every booking, so you're never alone on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Minden Hills RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy makes booking low-risk. Every reservation comes with a cancellation policy set by RVezy (not the host), including a money-back grace period right after you book. Specific terms depend on how far out your trip is and whether unusual circumstances like severe weather affect your plans. Ontario cottage country can throw a curveball (early snow, spring flooding on the Gull River), and RVezy's customer support team is there to help if your situation changes. You can find the full cancellation details on the RVezy Help Center before confirming. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Minden Hills RVs for July and August weekends, knowing you have flexibility if life shifts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Minden Hills?
Absolutely, the Haliburton Highlands are a dog lover's paradise. Many hosts on RVezy offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Minden Hills, and you can filter listings directly by the Pet-Friendly tag to see them instantly. Once you've found a few you like, message the host to confirm any details like deposit, breed, or size. Your pup will love the dog-friendly trails at Dahl Forest, the Minden River Walk along the Gull River, and the off-leash beach areas at some local lakes. Most Ontario Parks campgrounds (including Algonquin's nearby Mew Lake and Pog Lake) welcome leashed dogs, though Canisbay Lake has designated dog-free zones if you'd prefer the opposite. Pack a tick prevention plan, Haliburton woods are blackleg tick territory.
ontarioparks.ca/camping/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Minden Hills?
Yes, RV delivery in Minden Hills is one of the best ways to skip the stress of driving an unfamiliar rig. Many RVezy hosts will deliver to your campground, cottage, or private property in the area, set up the RV, level it, hook up water and electricity, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is especially popular for guests heading to The Woods of Minden Hills, Algonquin's Mew Lake Campground, or a friend's cottage on Gull Lake or Twelve Mile Lake. Use the Delivery filter when browsing, then message the host for an exact quote (most charge by the kilometre from their location). It's a game-changer for a first time renting an RV.
mindenhills.ca/visitors/Can I find an RV rental with unlimited mileage in Minden Hills?
You sure can. Some RVezy hosts in the Minden Hills area offer unlimited mileage, while others include a generous daily allowance (often 100 to 200 km per day) with a small per-kilometre fee after that. Each listing clearly displays its mileage policy on the page, so there are no surprises. For reference, Minden Hills sits about 220 km from Toronto, 90 km from the West Gate of Algonquin Provincial Park, and 70 km from Bracebridge in Muskoka. A typical week-long Minden Hills RV trip with day excursions usually clocks 500 to 800 km. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Ontario road trip from Minden Hills (say, to Tobermory or up the Ottawa Valley), filter for unlimited mileage upfront.
ontario.ca/page/driving-and-roadsWhere are the best campgrounds near Minden Hills for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Minden Hills include The Woods of Minden Hills (a 103-acre forested RV resort between Minden and Haliburton with waterfront sites and a private lake), Minden Off-Road Park (family-friendly with a pool and playground), and Ontario River Little Resort just down County Road 21. For full provincial-park RV camping in Minden Hills' backyard, head an hour north to Algonquin Provincial Park's Mew Lake or Pog Lake Campgrounds, both with electrical sites that fit larger rigs. Silent Lake Provincial Park, about 50 minutes east, is another stunner. Pro tip: most local private parks book up fast for July and August long weekends, so reserve as soon as your RV is confirmed.
ontarioparks.ca/park/algonquin/campingWhen is the best time to visit Minden Hills in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Minden Hills, with each season offering something special. June brings warm days (around 22 to 25°C), fewer bugs than May, and wide-open campground availability. July and August are peak swimming season on Gull Lake and Twelve Mile Lake (water temps in the low 20s, air highs near 27°C). Late September to mid-October is the showstopper: Haliburton Highlands fall colours rival anywhere in Ontario, with crisp 10 to 15°C days perfect for hiking Panorama Park Lookout. Winters here drop to minus 15°C or colder with heavy snow, so most local hosts close their RVs from November to April. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September a full year ahead for peak foliage.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/Can I rent an RV in Minden Hills in winter?
Yes, winter RV adventures in the Haliburton Highlands are absolutely possible, though the selection is smaller. Some RVezy hosts in the Minden Hills area offer winterized motorhome rentals with heated tanks, propane furnaces, and shore-power capability built for Ontario cold (temperatures regularly hit minus 20°C in January and February). Filter listings for those with winter readiness, then message the host to confirm cold-weather features before booking. You'll need a campground with winter electrical hookups (Mew Lake Campground in Algonquin stays open year-round and offers full-service winter sites). Pair your trip with the Haliburton Nordic Trails, snowmobiling on the HCSA system, or ice fishing on Gull Lake. Pro tip: keep grey and black tanks treated with RV antifreeze and drip-feed water lines if you'll be stationary in deep cold.
ontarioparks.ca/parksblog/winter-camping-mew-lake/I'm a first-time RV renter. Will I actually know how to use everything?
Yes, and you're going to feel like a pro faster than you think. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering how to operate the propane, water pump, generator, slide-outs, awning, fridge, furnace, and dump procedures. They'll answer every question and most will share their phone number for the whole trip in case you need a quick refresher. First time renting an RV in Minden Hills works best with a smaller Class B or Class C, both easy to drive on Highway 35 and the winding cottage roads around Horseshoe Lake. You can also message hosts before you book to ask anything from how the toilet works to what's stocked in the kitchen. RVezy's customer support team has your back too, 24/7.
destinationontario.com/en-ca/articles/rving-ontario-for-beginnersWhat happens if I have a breakdown or emergency in Minden Hills?
You're covered, day or night. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 35, a dead battery at The Woods of Minden Hills, or a propane issue near Algonquin's gate gets handled with one phone call. You'll also have a direct line to your host, who knows the rig inside and out and can often troubleshoot small issues over the phone. RVezy's support team is reachable throughout your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before leaving the host's driveway, and download offline maps since cell coverage can be patchy on backroads north of Minden.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Minden Hills?
Minden Hills is a perfect launchpad for an Ontario RV road trip. From Minden, you're about 90 km (roughly 75 minutes) to the West Gate of Algonquin Provincial Park, 70 km to the lakes and cliffs of Muskoka, 220 km south to Toronto, and 350 km east to Ottawa. A popular loop heads north through Dorset, into Algonquin via Highway 60, then back through Haliburton village (about 5 days at an easy pace). Another favourite is the Highlands East loop through Bancroft and Silent Lake Provincial Park. Cross-border travel from Minden Hills into the US may be allowed depending on the host's insurance, just confirm by messaging them before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental.
ontario.ca/page/driving-and-roadsWhat should I budget for fuel on a Minden Hills RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest expense after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Expect 18 to 25 L/100 km for a Class C motorhome and 12 to 16 L/100 km for a Class B campervan. With Ontario gas prices generally hovering around $1.45 to $1.70 per litre (slightly higher in cottage country), a 600 km Minden Hills RV trip in a Class C runs roughly $200 to $275 in fuel. Fill up in town (there are stations on Bobcaygeon Road and County Road 121) before heading into Algonquin Park, where pumps are limited and pricier. Pro tip: drive 90 km/h instead of 110 km/h on Highway 35 and you can shave 15 to 20% off your fuel use.
ontario.ca/page/gasoline-pricesHow far in advance should I book a campground near Minden Hills?
For peak summer weekends, the earlier the better. Ontario Parks opens reservations exactly 5 months ahead through reservations.ontarioparks.ca, and popular Algonquin campgrounds like Mew Lake, Pog Lake, and Canisbay Lake often sell out within minutes for July and August Friday and Saturday nights. For midweek summer stays, 6 to 8 weeks ahead is usually enough. Private parks like The Woods of Minden Hills also fill up early for summer holidays. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 7:00 a.m. five months before your target arrival date, log in to the Ontario Parks system before opening time, and have your site preferences ready. Shoulder-season trips (June and September) are far more relaxed and often bookable just a week or two out.
ontarioparks.ca/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like in and around Minden Hills?
Driving an RV around Minden Hills is very manageable, even for first-timers. Highway 35 is the main north-south corridor, well-paved with gentle curves and wide shoulders. Once you turn onto cottage-country side roads (County Road 21, Bobcaygeon Road, Highway 121), expect winding two-lane routes, the occasional steep grade, and tight bends near lakes like Horseshoe and Twelve Mile. Watch for deer and moose, especially at dawn and dusk between Minden and Dorset. In late fall and winter, snow squalls off Georgian Bay can hit Highway 35 fast. Pro tip: avoid Friday afternoon northbound and Sunday afternoon southbound traffic during summer when Toronto cottagers clog the highway. Travelling Tuesday through Thursday makes the whole Haliburton Highlands feel like a private getaway.
511on.ca/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Minden Hills?
Local campgrounds offer a great mix of comfort and nature. The Woods of Minden Hills provides full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, swimming, and laundry. Algonquin's Mew Lake offers electrical sites, hot showers, flush toilets, and a sanitation station for dumping tanks and filling fresh water. Most Ontario Parks campgrounds near Minden Hills have potable water fill stations and dump stations included with your nightly fee. For dumping or filling water in town, the Minden Hills municipal facility on Bobcaygeon Road has a public dump station seasonally. Pro tip: carry a 25-foot water hose and a 30-amp to 15-amp adapter, as some older cottage-country sites have variable hookup setups. Cell signal and Wi-Fi can be spotty deep in Algonquin, so download entertainment ahead.
ontarioparks.ca/park/algonquin/facilitiesWhat's actually included inside the RV I'm renting?
More than you might expect. Most motorhome rentals in Minden Hills come fully equipped with a kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, basic cookware and dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable beds with linens (check the listing), a dining area, heating, and air conditioning. Class C motorhomes usually sleep 4 to 7 people with seatbelts for everyone on board. Many rigs include a generator, awning, outdoor camp chairs, and a TV; some have Wi-Fi boosters or solar. Each RVezy listing spells out exactly what's included, what's optional, and what the sleeping configuration looks like. Pro tip: message the host with your group's specific needs (high chair, dog crate, extra propane tank) before booking, they can often add gear that makes your Minden Hills RV trip seamless.
destinationontario.com/en-ca/articles/rving-ontario-for-beginnersWhat add-ons and extras can I get for my Minden Hills RV rental?
Lots of fun extras can take your trip up a notch. RVezy hosts in Minden Hills commonly offer add-ons like bike racks, kayaks or canoes (perfect for paddling the Gull River or Horseshoe Lake), portable BBQs, extra propane, generator use, linen and kitchen kits, outdoor patio mats, and even fishing gear. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, especially for guests heading to Algonquin or a private cottage rental. Each fee is listed on the host's page so you can budget upfront. Pickup is typically between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. and dropoff before 11:00 a.m., though many hosts are flexible if you ask. Pro tip: ask about adding a Stand Up Paddleboard rental, the Get Up Stand Up Paddle Co. operates right out of Haliburton if your host doesn't carry one.
mindenhills.ca/visitors/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, all handled through the RVezy platform (no cash exchanged with the host). You pay the rental total upfront when you book, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your credit card a few days before your trip starts. The deposit amount is shown clearly on each listing and is released back to your card after your trip if the RV is returned in good condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels. To avoid any deposit issues on your Minden Hills RV trip, take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, dump tanks at a proper sanitation station (Mew Lake or the Minden municipal site), and refuel before returning. Easy, transparent, and stress-free.
