Campgrounds and RV parks near Maskinongé, QC

Lake Saint-Pierre dominates outdoor activity on the south side of the region, with boating, fishing for walleye and perch, kayaking through the Sorel Islands archipelago, and bird watching during the spring and fall migrations. North of the autoroute, La Mauricie National Park offers paddling on a chain of lakes, hiking, mountain biking and a scenic parkway drive, while the Mastigouche Wildlife Reserve adds backcountry fishing lakes, chalets and rustic camping. Closer to town, families ride the regional cycling network, visit the Parc des chutes de Saint-Ursule waterfalls, tour microbreweries and vineyards along the Chemin du Roy, and stop in Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, a village known for storytelling and walking trails. Shawinigan's Cité de l'énergie and the old port of Trois-Rivières are both within easy driving distance.

The camping season in this part of Quebec is short and concentrated. Most private campgrounds in the region operate from mid-May to mid-October, with peak demand from late June through Labour Day, including the Quebec construction holiday in late July when sites book out weeks in advance. Spring is wet and cool, blackflies and mosquitoes peak in late May and June, and the average last spring frost in the Trois-Rivières area falls around mid-May, so RVers arriving early should expect overnight temperatures near freezing. Summer brings warm, humid days, scattered thunderstorms, and the best paddling and beach conditions on Lake Saint-Pierre. Fall is a strong shoulder season: foliage in the Mauricie hills typically peaks in early October, nights turn cold quickly, and some campgrounds reduce services or close by mid-October. Winter camping is limited to provincial sites in the SÉPAQ network and to winter operations at La Mauricie National Park rather than the private grounds around Maskinongé, most of which are closed from November through April.

Expect a bilingual environment where French is the primary language at most private campgrounds, though staff in the tourist corridor generally manage English bookings. Sites range from open, grassy riverside layouts on the St. Lawrence plain to wooded, sloped sites in the foothills closer to the national park; pull-through serviced sites suitable for larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs are limited and worth confirming in advance. Cell coverage is reliable along Route 138 and Autoroute 40 but drops off heading north into the wildlife reserve. Biting insects are heavy from late May through early July, campfires are permitted at most sites but subject to provincial fire bans during dry spells, and black bears are present in forested zones, so food should be stored inside the RV. Potable water and dump stations are common at private grounds but not guaranteed at backcountry sites.
