Campgrounds and RV parks near Ragueneau, QC

The St. Lawrence Estuary drives most activity. Boat launches, kayak put-ins, short hiking trails, and birdwatching are available right in Ragueneau, and the village sits along the Côte-Nord shoreline route. Whale and seal sightings are common along this stretch. Across the estuary, Bic Provincial Park offers coastal hiking, bike paths, lookouts including Pic Champlain, sea kayaking with a park partner, and a discovery and visitors centre at Ferme Rioux. In the Matane Wildlife Reserve, the John sector connects to the International Appalachian Trail with short and multi-day hikes, brook trout fishing, and one of the highest moose densities in Quebec, with over 4,000 moose across 1,275 square kilometres.

The Ragueneau camping season is short. Most private campgrounds along the Côte-Nord, including those near the village, operate from late May or early June through mid-September, with peak demand from late June through mid-August when Quebec construction holidays drive bookings. Bic Provincial Park's campgrounds typically open in mid-May and close in mid-October, while the park itself stays open year-round with a single winter entrance at Rivière-du-Sud-Ouest and limited winter camping available in the Porc-Épic sector. In the Matane Wildlife Reserve, the John campground operates roughly from late May through early September, while the John registration centre remains accessible into mid-November with restricted access during the big-game hunting period from early September to October 10, and full closure from October 11 to late June. September brings cooler nights, fewer crowds, and strong fall colour along the estuary, but reduced services. October and November turn wet and cold, with snow arriving by month-end. Winter RV travel is impractical on this part of Route 138.

Expect a French-first region. Staff at most campgrounds and visitor centres speak some English, but signage, menus, and tourist material are primarily in French. Distances between services are long: Route 138 along the north shore has stretches with limited fuel, groceries, and dump stations, so plan top-ups in larger towns such as Baie-Comeau or Forestville. There is no sewage dump station inside the Matane Wildlife Reserve apart from three-service sites at the John campground, so RVs need to dump in Matane or Amqui. Cell coverage is patchy outside villages and weak inside the wildlife reserve. Black flies and mosquitoes are heavy in June and early July, especially inland. Wildlife encounters, including moose and black bear, are realistic in the interior parks, so use proper food storage.
