Summer is the prime stretch for warm weather, paddling, and salmon fishing, but it is also when sites fill fastest. September brings cooler nights, autumn colour, and quieter campgrounds, though RV travellers should note that big-game hunting takes place in the Port-Cartier-Sept-Îles reserve from mid-September to mid-October. During that period, access is restricted to a defined safety zone and orange vests are required on the trails. Spring thaw can leave trails muddy, so trail status is worth checking before arrival.

Expect a remote, boreal-forest setting with long driving distances between services. Route 138 is the single coastal highway and the only road link, and access to Lac Walker is by a maintained gravel road off Route 138 north of Port-Cartier. Cell coverage is intermittent once inland, and fuel stops are spaced out. Sites at Lac Walker range from serviced to rustic camping, with cabins and ready-to-camp units also available. Coastal sites at Camping Domaine Ensoleille 2000 include serviced RV spots, unserviced tent areas, and small rental units, with a beach, convenience store, laundry, and showers on site. Wildlife encounters are common: ruffed grouse, snowshoe hare, raptors, and, along the shoreline, whales and seabirds. Black flies and mosquitoes peak in June and early July.
