The Mathieu-D'Amours dam in downtown Matane houses a salmon-observation centre where visitors watch Atlantic salmon travel up a fishway through large viewing windows. The Matane River and its fishing pools are accessible from town through the ZEC de la Rivière-Matane. In town, the Promenade des Capitaines boardwalk and the La Balade trail run along the river toward Parc des Îles, which has a swimmable beach, water play area, and rentals. South of town, the Sépaq wildlife reserve offers a long stretch of the International Appalachian Trail through the Chic-Choc range, plus moose and black-bear observation. Offshore, charter operators run mackerel, striped bass, and marine-mammal trips from the Matane harbour.

The RV season is short and concentrated. Most campgrounds in the Matane area, including the Sépaq sites in Réserve faunique de Matane, run roughly from late May to early September, with the wildlife reserve's two campgrounds (Camping John at the entrance and Étang-à-la-Truite, 42 km in on a gravel road) opening for that window. July and August deliver the most reliable weather and the longest daylight hours, with summer daytime highs near 20°C, and these months also bring the highest demand for serviced sites. Spring is wet and cool, with lingering snow in the Chic-Chocs into May. June opens the salmon-fishing season and is a strong shoulder month for travellers who want quieter sites. Fall colours peak through late September into early October, but campers should plan around the wildlife reserve's hunting closures: hiking trails and rustic campsites in Réserve faunique de Matane are restricted by regulation from early September through mid-October during the big-game hunting season, and closed entirely from mid-October until late June. Winter closes the campgrounds; the region pivots to backcountry skiing and snowmobiling.

Matane is a working town, not a resort, with full grocery, fuel, propane, and dump-station services along Route 132. Cell coverage is reliable in town and along the coast, but it drops quickly once campers head inland on Route 195 toward the wildlife reserve. The road to Étang-à-la-Truite is gravel and slow going for larger rigs, with about 42 km of unpaved access from the John registration post. Black flies and mosquitoes peak from late May through early July, especially inland. Moose are common on Route 195 at dawn and dusk, so night driving is best avoided. The Matane-Baie-Comeau-Godbout ferry runs from the port and requires advance reservations for RVs, particularly in summer.
