Campgrounds and RV parks near Causapscal, QC

Salmon fishing defines the region. The Causapscal, Matapédia and Patapédia rivers are managed for sport fishing, and the Matamajaw historic site in town is a museum dedicated to the sport. Paddlers can run sections of the Matapédia, Causapscal or Restigouche rivers, with guided descents and canoe-camping trips available from local outfitters. North of town, the Matane Wildlife Reserve covers 1,275 square kilometres and holds one of the highest moose densities per square kilometre in Quebec. The reserve includes more than 100 kilometres of the International Appalachian Trail of Quebec, crossing the Chic-Chocs with hikes ranging from short loops to summit climbs of Mont Blanc and Mont Nicol-Albert. Across the river in New Brunswick, Sugarloaf Provincial Park offers a lift-served downhill bike park, more than 25 kilometres of hiking and biking trails, and a summit climb above Campbellton.

The camping season in the Matapédia Valley is short and concentrated. Most serviced campgrounds operate from late May through early or mid-September. Sépaq's Matane Wildlife Reserve typically opens the John sector from late May to early September, with Étang à la Truite operating from early June to the first Monday of September. Vehicle traffic in the reserve is then restricted by regulation during the big-game hunting season from early September into early November. Sugarloaf Provincial Park Campground in New Brunswick runs roughly May through September, though the park itself stays active year-round for skiing and winter recreation. June through August is peak season. Daytime temperatures sit in the low twenties Celsius, blackflies and mosquitoes are heaviest in June and early July, and salmon fishing draws steady traffic to riverside pools. September brings cooler nights, fewer bugs and fall colour through the Appalachian foothills, but services begin shutting down by month's end. Winter is long, snowy and cold, and most private campgrounds near Causapscal close from October through April.

Cell signal is limited once travellers leave Route 132, and coverage inside the Matane Wildlife Reserve is restricted to a few locations near the registration centres. The road into Étang à la Truite is 42 kilometres of gravel from the John registration centre, so larger RVs should plan fuel and supplies before heading in. Groceries, fuel and propane are available in Causapscal, Amqui and Matane, and a dump station can be reached in Matane or Amqui. Wildlife is abundant. Moose are common in the Matane reserve and active at dawn and dusk along Route 132 and reserve roads, so reduced-speed driving is essential. Black bears are present throughout the region, so food and waste should be stored securely. Most campgrounds are wooded and quiet, with a mix of full-service, electrical and unserviced sites. Bring layers: summer nights can drop below 10°C even in July.
