Campgrounds and RV parks near Val-Brillant, QC

Lac Matapédia anchors most day-trip planning, with swimming, paddling, and fishing as the main draws. Hikers head into the Réserve faunique de Matane, where more than 100 km of the International Appalachian Trail of Québec crosses the Chic-Chocs and short trails branch from the John registration centre. Moose viewing is a signature activity in the reserve, which holds one of the densest moose populations in Quebec, with more than 4,000 moose across 1,275 square kilometres. Anglers fish brook trout in reserve lakes, lake trout in Lac Matane, and Atlantic salmon in the many pools of the Matane River. Winter visitors turn to skiing at the nearby Val d'Irène regional park and to snowmobile trails through the valley.

The camping season in the Matapédia Valley is short and tightly clustered around summer. Private campgrounds typically open in early to mid June and close in early to mid September. Camping Causapscal chez Moose runs from early June to early September, and Camping De La Riviere Matane runs from mid-June to late September. The two SÉPAQ campgrounds in the Réserve faunique de Matane, John and Etang a la Truite - Matane Reserve, are open from late May to early September. July and August are the peak weeks for serviced RV sites, lining up with warm lake temperatures and the salmon fishing season. Early summer can be wet and buggy, with blackflies giving way to mosquitoes by early July. Reserve hiking trails are fully open from late June to the first Monday of September. From the first Tuesday of September into mid-October, trail access is restricted by regulation during the moose hunting season. Winter shifts the region toward skiing and snowmobiling, and serviced RV camping is not available.

Expect a mix of valley and backcountry experiences. Private sites along Route 132 are RV-friendly, with two- and three-service pads, dump stations, showers, laundry, and often a pool or playground. Camping Causapscal chez Moose, for example, lays out sites on terraced levels with a heated outdoor pool. SÉPAQ reserve campgrounds are more rustic. The campground near the John registration centre suits trailers and motorhomes, while Etang a la Truite - Matane Reserve sits 42 km in on a gravel forest road, better suited to smaller rigs or those comfortable with rough access. Note there is no sewage dump station inside the reserve, and three-service sites are only found near the John sector. Cell coverage is limited, with Wi-Fi available at the registration centres.
