Campgrounds and RV parks near Amqui, QC

Activity in the valley centres on the Matapédia and Humqui rivers and Lac Matapédia. The Parc régional de la Seigneurie du Lac-Matapédia stretches along the lake and offers hiking trails ranging from easy lakeshore loops to longer ridge routes with valley viewpoints. A signed cycling route, part of the province-wide Route Verte network, passes through downtown Amqui and runs the length of the valley. Atlantic salmon fishing draws anglers to the Matapédia and Matane rivers, with strict catch-and-release rules for large salmon. Inside the Réserve faunique de Matane, the International Appalachian Trail offers more than 100 km of trails through the early Chic-Chocs, plus moose and black bear observation, brook and lake trout fishing, and paddle rentals at Étang-à-la-Truite.

The RV camping season in the Matapédia Valley is short and concentrated. Most private and Sépaq campgrounds open in late May or early June and close in early September around Labour Day. Camping Causapscal chez Moose, for example, runs roughly early June to early September, and the Réserve faunique de Matane campgrounds operate on a similar window. July and August are peak months: warm weather, full services, salmon fishing on the Matapédia, and the busiest cycling and lake traffic. June can be cool with high water and active blackflies near forested rivers. September brings valley fall colour, cooler nights and quieter sites, but it also overlaps with the big game hunting season inside the Matane reserve, when hiking and motor-vehicle access are restricted by regulation from the first Tuesday in September through early November. Winter shifts the area to snowmobiling and backcountry skiing rather than RV camping, with most campgrounds closed and services consolidated in town. Reserve early for any weekend in July or August.

Amqui itself is a service town of roughly 6,000 with full grocery, fuel, hardware and repair options on Route 132, which simplifies provisioning before heading deeper into the valley or the Matane reserve. Cell coverage is reliable in and around town but drops off quickly inside the wildlife reserve, where signal is limited to a few points and Wi-Fi is available only at the registration centres. Roads inside the Matane reserve are largely gravel, including the 42 km approach to Etang a la Truite, so plan for slow travel and check tire and tow conditions. Wildlife on the road, especially moose, is common at dawn and dusk. Mosquitoes and blackflies are heavy in June and early July near rivers. Bring layers; valley nights stay cool even in midsummer.
