Campgrounds and RV parks near Ripon, QC

Water is the main draw. Paddlers can launch into Baie Parisien at Plaisance or head up the Rivière la Petite-Nation toward the waterfalls, a round trip of roughly four hours. The Chutes du Moulin waterfall, with a vertical drop of over 35 metres, anchors a scenic hike with interpretation panels on the old village of North Nation Mills. At Lac-Simon, a two-kilometre beach with clear water and fine sand supports swimming and water sports on a large open lake. The surrounding woodland offers multi-purpose trails for walking and cycling. Cyclists also use the rail trail along the Ottawa River corridor. Families will find playgrounds, swimming beaches, canoe, kayak, and pedal-boat rentals, and supervised swimming at the SEPAQ sites. Fishing for smallmouth bass and speckled trout is available on smaller lakes in the area.

The Outaouais has four sharp seasons and that drives when campgrounds open and how busy they get. Most private and SEPAQ campgrounds in the region operate from mid-May through mid-October, with shoulder weeks offering quieter sites but cool nights. Spring at Plaisance is defined by the migration: thousands of Canada geese pass through, followed in summer by ducks, herons, ospreys, and dozens of other species. July and August are peak season, with serviced RV sites at Centre touristique du Lac-Simon and Plaisance Provincial Park filling well in advance, especially weekends and the construction-holiday period in late July. September brings cooler nights, fall colour through the Petite-Nation valley, and easier site availability. Winter shifts Lac-Simon into a snow-sports hub, with cross-country skiing, tubing, skating, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing, and white-tailed deer are often visible in the area. Black-fly and mosquito pressure peaks from late May through June, so bring repellent for early-season trips.

Expect a mix of forested SEPAQ campgrounds and smaller private parks rather than large commercial resorts. Plaisance has a variety of sites catering to tent campers, small trailers, and larger RVs, with hiking trails, a beach, and an outdoor pool, and the facilities are well maintained. Flush toilets and free hot showers are standard at the SEPAQ sites. Staff are welcoming and mostly bilingual, though French is the dominant language in the region, so a few basic phrases help. Dogs are permitted only on specific campsites at Lac-Simon under certain conditions, and Quebec national parks restrict pets to designated areas, so confirm policy before booking. Cell coverage is reliable near the villages and patchy in the deeper park sectors. Bring potable water containers, mosquito repellent, and layers for cool evenings even in summer.
