Paddling defines the area. La Vérendrye holds roughly 4,000 lakes and two large reservoirs, Cabonga and Dozois, with nearly 20 marked canoe-camping circuits and more than 800 kilometres of routes. Lac Rapide - La Verendrye Reserve sits at one of the main registration centres for these trips, with canoe and kayak rentals and a shuttle service. Aiguebelle offers shorter canoe outings on Lac Loïs, plus naturalist-guided rabaska tours from late May to early September. Fishing is a major draw across both territories for walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and speckled trout, with boat rentals available at staffed sectors. Hikers can cross Aiguebelle's 22-metre suspension footbridge and climb its lookouts. Beaches, playgrounds, and shorter interpretive trails make the developed sectors workable for families.

The practical camping season runs from mid-May through mid-October. Aiguebelle's Abijévis campground typically opens in mid-May and closes in mid-October, with the Destor and Taschereau entrances closed from late October to late May and access only via the Mont-Brun entrance in winter. The La Vérendrye campgrounds run on a similar rhythm, with services operating from roughly mid-May to mid-September. Snow cover is reliable from November through April, and most road-accessible campgrounds shut down through winter, though the reserve remains open for snowmobiling on Provincial Trail 63. Late May and June bring vivid green-up, wildflowers, and prime wildlife viewing for moose, beaver, and black bear, but also peak blackfly and mosquito activity. July and August deliver the warmest weather and the busiest reservation pressure. September cools quickly and brings strong fall colour through the boreal forest. Hunting season opens in the wildlife reserve in autumn, so campers should check sector restrictions and wear blaze orange when walking trails.

Expect remote, lake-dominated terrain with limited cell coverage outside the main service areas at Le Domaine and the park visitor centres. Roads inside La Vérendrye include long sections through wilderness, and Route 117 between Val-d'Or and Mont-Laurier covers a long stretch of the reserve with few services in between, so travellers should fuel up and stock food before heading in. Serviced RV sites with one or two hookups are concentrated at the Abijévis campground in Aiguebelle and in the drive-in sectors of La Vérendrye. Many other sites are semi-serviced or rustic, and canoe-camping sites are accessible only by water. Drinking water is not available at every site, so bring containers. Black bears are present, so food should be stored in vehicles or hung well away from tents. Biting insects are intense in June and early July.
