Fishing is the primary draw. Canoe Lake and the surrounding boreal lakes hold northern pike, walleye, and lake whitefish, and public boat access is available at the Canoe Lake Recreation Site on the western shore. Paddlers can follow Churchill River drainage routes, some of which trace historic fur-trade travel corridors. To the east, Lac La Ronge Provincial Park has close to 100 lakes and more than 30 documented canoe routes, plus Nistowiak Falls, one of Saskatchewan's highest waterfalls. To the south, Meadow Lake Provincial Park offers the 135-kilometre Boreal Trail for multi-day hiking, plus swimming beaches and interpretive programs. Wildlife viewing includes moose, black bear, and boreal songbirds.

The practical camping season in this part of northern Saskatchewan runs from the May long weekend through the September long weekend, with most provincial-park campgrounds staffed and serviced during that window. Lac La Ronge Provincial Park typically opens for reservations in mid-May, and Meadow Lake Provincial Park follows a similar schedule. July and August are the peak booking months, when weekends at Greig Lake, Waterhen Lake, and Nemeiben fill quickly and lakeside sites can be reserved out well in advance. June brings long daylight hours but also the heaviest blackfly and mosquito activity, so bug protection is essential. September offers cooler nights, lighter crowds, and strong fall colour through the boreal forest, though services begin to wind down after Labour Day. Winter camping is possible in limited form, but water systems shut off and access roads may be snow-covered. Wildfire closures have affected nearby parks in recent seasons, so campers should check park advisories before travel.

Expect classic boreal-forest camping: treed sites, sand or gravel pads, and lake access rather than resort-style amenities. Greig Lake has around 143 sites with electric hookups, potable water, showers, a dump station, and laundry. Flotten Lake, Waterhen Lake, and Vivian Lake are smaller and more rustic, with a mix of electric and non-electric sites and basic service buildings. Lac La Ronge campgrounds such as Nemeiben and Nut Point offer electric sites and modern shower facilities. Cell service is inconsistent once off the main highways, roads into some campgrounds are gravel, and mosquitoes and blackflies are heavy in early summer. Bear-aware food storage is expected throughout the region.
