Campgrounds near Ashford, Alabama
Ashford sits in Houston County in Alabama's Wiregrass region, about ten miles east of Dothan and close to the Chattahoochee River, which forms the Alabama-Georgia state line. The area is flat, pine-forested, and firmly in the humid subtropical zone, giving RV travelers a long shoulder season that stretches from early spring through late fall.
Private RV parks dominate the local inventory. A Okay RV Park in Dothan, Rosemont RV Park, and Todd Farms RV Park in Headland serve travelers moving along U.S. 431 and connecting to Interstate 10, while Hidden Hollow RV Park in Cottonwood sits on U.S. 231 south of Dothan next to the Magnolia Creek Lodge.
For public land camping, Omussee Creek RV Park is the RV area at Houston County's Omussee Creek Park, sitting along the Chattahoochee near Columbia. The county park offers primitive tent sites and RV hookups at modest rates, providing a lower-cost alternative to the private parks in the Dothan corridor.
Things to do near Ashford
The Chattahoochee River drives most outdoor recreation in the area. Omussee Creek Park has two boat ramps, hiking and nature trails, two softball fields, a volleyball court, and picnic pavilions available for rent, with a comfort station on site.
Dothan, ten miles west, adds indoor and family options: the Wiregrass Museum of Art, Landmark Park (a living history farm and Alabama's official state agricultural museum), and the U.S. Army Aviation Museum at nearby Fort Novosel, the base formerly known as Fort Rucker. Just across the Georgia line, Kolomoki Mounds State Park preserves Woodland-period Native American earthworks and offers additional hiking and lake fishing.
Golf, freshwater fishing on the Chattahoochee, and drives to the Florida Panhandle beaches (roughly ninety minutes south) round out the options for RV travelers based in the Ashford area.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of southeast Alabama. From mid-March through May, daytime highs sit in the seventies and low eighties, humidity is manageable, and area campgrounds fill on weekends but rarely on weeknights. October and early November bring similar conditions, drier air, and cooler evenings suited to campfires.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Highs routinely reach the low nineties, and heat indices climb well above one hundred. Full hookups with fifty-amp service become important for running air conditioning, and shaded sites are worth requesting early where available.
Winter is mild by northern standards. Freezes occur but are usually brief, and most private parks in the area remain open year-round, making the Ashford corridor a viable snowbird stop between Florida and points north.
How to book campgrounds near Ashford
Most campgrounds in the Ashford and Dothan area are privately owned and take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. A Okay RV Park, Rosemont RV Park, Todd Farms RV Park, and Hidden Hollow RV Park all handle bookings this way, and calling ahead is the most reliable route for confirming site length, hookup amperage, and pull-through availability.
Omussee Creek RV Park is operated by Houston County and does not use an online reservation portal, so arrival earlier in the day improves the chance of securing a site, especially on holiday weekends.
For peak weekends in spring and fall, and for any stay overlapping the National Peanut Festival in Dothan each November, booking four to eight weeks ahead is recommended.
What to expect at Ashford-area campgrounds
Expect flat sites with full hookups at most private parks in the Ashford and Dothan corridor. Big-rig access is generally good; Hidden Hollow RV Park, for example, offers long pull-through concrete pads with 30/50-amp service, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi throughout the park. Older parks can have tighter interior roads, so confirming rig length when booking is worth the call.
Amenities vary. Larger properties typically offer laundry, a bathhouse, and Wi-Fi of variable quality, while public sites at Omussee Creek Park are more basic. Cell coverage is generally strong across the major carriers throughout Houston County.
Wildlife is part of the experience: expect mosquitoes and no-see-ums in warmer months, occasional armadillos and deer around dusk, and fire ants near grassy sites. Standard bug spray and a quick site check before setting up handle most of it.
