Campgrounds and RV parks near Bear Creek, AL

The BCDA reservoirs are the center of activity, and Bear Creek Lakes are promoted as some of the cleanest recreational waters in Alabama. Boating, kayaking, and fishing are common across the system, with anglers targeting largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, and channel catfish. Designated sand swim beaches operate at several BCDA day-use areas. The Bear Creek Floatway, a roughly 30-mile canoe and tubing float fed by scheduled releases from Upper Bear Reservoir, runs during the warm months and is a signature summer draw. Hiking trails extend into the adjacent Bankhead National Forest east of the lakes, including access to Sipsey Wilderness waterfalls a short drive away. Hackleburg and Haleyville host small-town diners and outfitters that rent tubes, kayaks, and paddleboards in season.

The core camping season runs from spring through mid-fall. BCDA campgrounds are usually open from mid-March until mid-October, with the Bear Creek Floatway operating on scheduled release days during summer. TVA begins slowly lowering Little Bear, Big Bear, and Cedar reservoirs on November 1 and begins raising them again in February, so shoreline conditions change significantly outside the summer pool. Summer is peak. Weekends between mid-June and mid-August fill quickly, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day sell out furthest in advance. Weekday arrivals see far more availability, and shoulder weeks in late April, May, and September offer cooler nights with the lakes still at summer pool. Winter is the off-season. Most BCDA campgrounds close, water and restrooms are shut down, and services in surrounding towns run on shorter hours. Private options such as Turkey Hill RV Park may remain open year-round for travelers passing through.

Roads into the BCDA campgrounds are paved but narrow, with a few tight lakeside turns. Drivers of larger Class A or long fifth-wheel rigs should arrive in daylight and follow the posted BCDA access routes rather than shortest-distance GPS directions. Cell service is spotty at the shoreline sites and improves closer to Haleyville. Download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving town. Camp managers are typically away from the campgrounds on Mondays, so plan check-in accordingly or call ahead. Expect wooded, shaded sites with picnic tables and fire rings, most with electric and water hookups. Aggressive dog breeds are not permitted in BCDA campgrounds, and pets are not allowed in cabins or beach areas. Food should be stored inside the rig overnight to keep raccoons and skunks out.
