Campgrounds near Brent, Alabama
Brent sits in Bibb County in central Alabama, along the Cahaba River between Tuscaloosa and Selma. The area gives RV travelers access to several state-managed campgrounds within roughly an hour's drive, most of them tied to historic ironworks sites or Black Belt lakes. Options range from full-hookup state park loops to smaller private RV parks along the local highways.
The closest destination campground is Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park, a 45-acre site in Bibb County with a preserved Civil War-era furnace and a creek running through the property. A short drive north puts travelers at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, which spans more than 1,500 acres in three counties set aside for hiking, camping and outdoor recreation. South toward Selma, Paul M Grist State Park sits about 17 miles north of Selma and offers water activities on a 100-acre lake as well as facilities for camping and picnicking.
For simpler overnight stops closer to town, Bama RV Station and Coaches Corner RV Park provide roadside RV parking without the state-park amenities.
Things to do near Brent
History and water recreation define the area. The ruins of the Brierfield Furnace preserve Civil War-era industry, and scenic trails wind through forests and along the banks of the Little Cahaba River. At Tannehill, families can explore restored pioneer cabins, a working gristmill, a cotton gin, and a miniature railroad that runs through the pines, with blacksmith, miller and craft demonstrations from spring through fall.
Paul M Grist State Park centers on Valley Creek Lake, a 100-acre lake stocked with bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and catfish, with electric trolling motors welcome but no gasoline motors permitted. The park has a boat ramp, picnic area, swimming beach and boat rentals, and is a featured site on the Alabama Black Belt Birding Trail where visitors are likely to see raptors, songbirds and waterfowl. Nearby Selma adds Civil Rights history, museums, and the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Central Alabama has relatively mild winters, hot summers, and year-round precipitation. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with warm days, cool nights, and active park programming. From spring through fall, blacksmiths, millers and craftsmen demonstrate their trades at Tannehill, and weekend events, trade days, and reenactments fill the calendar.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Shaded, creek-side sites at Brierfield and lake-adjacent sites at Paul M Grist help take the edge off. Insect repellent and full hookups for air conditioning are worth planning for.
Winter is the quiet season. Parks stay open, but staffing and programming taper off. Statewide, the wettest months are December and January, so travelers should expect rainy stretches and softer ground at primitive sites. Fall precipitation is more variable and can be influenced by tropical systems, so watching the tropical outlook in September and October is wise.
Booking and reservations
Reservation policies differ by park, so it pays to check before arrival. Tannehill offers over 250 campsites with a first-come, first-served policy, letting campers secure a site upon arrival without reservations. Sites during special events such as Trade Days and the Halloween Festival are popular and can fill on a first-come basis, so arriving early on event weekends matters.
Paul M Grist State Park does not use the central Alabama State Parks online reservation system; instead, campground reservations are handled by the Dallas County partnership and taken by phone at the park office. Brierfield Ironworks accepts campground bookings through its park office, and reservations are not taken during events at the on-site shooting range. Private options such as Bama RV Station and Coaches Corner RV Park handle bookings directly with the operator.
What to expect on site
State park campgrounds in this area lean rustic but functional. The Brierfield state park campground accommodates rigs up to 70 feet with electric, water, and sewer connections, plus a dump station for shorter stays. Amenities include bathhouses, a camp store with basic supplies and snacks, a seasonal swimming pool, large shade trees, and a spring-fed creek running through the property.
Tannehill offers improved campsites divided into three areas with water and electricity supported by two bathhouses and several dump stations, handles trailers both large and small, and has a separate area for primitive tent sites. Paul M Grist provides 11 RV sites with sewer, water, and 30- and 50-amp service, alongside a nearby ADA-accessible bathhouse cleaned daily. Cell coverage is generally usable but not universal, and the Brierfield property has spotty LTE in some loops.

You have flexibility when you rent an RV in Brent, AL, so booking feels low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, refunds depend on how far out your trip is. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Brent?
Absolutely. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental in Brent, where hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots (some ask a small pet cleaning fee, listed clearly on the page). Once you arrive, Payne Lake Recreation Area in the Talladega National Forest allows leashed pets at its campgrounds, and the surrounding forest trails are dog-friendly too. Bring a long lead, plenty of water (summer highs hit 90 degrees), and a tick check routine, since the wooded sites here are prime tick territory. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed for the smoothest pickup.
fs.usda.gov/alabamaCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Brent?
Yes, RV delivery in Brent is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to towing or driving a motorhome. Many hosts on RVezy offer to deliver right to Payne Lake Recreation Area, Lake Lurleen State Park, or even a private property nearby, then set up the rig, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location and are shown upfront on the listing. This is a favorite option for first-time renters and family RV trip groups. Pro tip: book delivery to a campground with full hookups so your only job is enjoying the campfire.
fs.usda.gov/alabamaHow far can I travel on an RV road trip from Brent?
You can cover serious ground on an RV road trip from Brent, since you're sitting in the heart of the Southeast. Tuscaloosa is just 35 miles north for game-day energy, Birmingham is about 60 miles northeast for city stops, Montgomery is around 90 miles southeast, the Gulf Shores beaches are roughly 240 miles south, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park is about 350 miles northeast. Mileage policies are set by each host, so check the listing carefully (many offer 100 to 150 free miles per day, and some advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage). Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-state loop, filter for unlimited-mileage rigs and message the host with your route so they can suggest the best driving days.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brent%2C%20AlabamaWhere are the best campgrounds near Brent, AL for RV camping?
You're surrounded by great options for RV camping near Brent. Payne Lake Recreation Area East and West (in Talladega National Forest, about 25 minutes from town) offers lakeside sites, with electric hookups on the West side and a dump station, suited for smaller to mid-size rigs. Lake Lurleen State Park near Tuscaloosa adds modern bathhouses, full hookups at many sites, and a swimming beach. Deerlick Creek Campground on Lake Tuscaloosa, run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, offers waterfront sites with electric and water hookups. Pro tip: reserve Payne Lake weekends well in advance through Recreation.gov, since locals love it for spring fishing.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234060When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Brent, AL?
The sweet spot for an RV trip in Brent runs from mid-March through May and again from late September through early November, when daytime highs hover between 65 and 82 degrees and the humidity backs off. Summer (June through August) brings highs in the low 90s with high humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but campgrounds along Payne Lake stay popular thanks to swimming. Winter is mild and underrated, with January highs near 55 degrees and lows around 35, so motorhome rental trips in Brent run year-round. Snow is extremely rare. Pro tip: October weekends light up the Talladega National Forest hardwoods with fall color, and that's the local favorite week to book.
weather.gov/bmx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I get help figuring it out?
You're in great hands, and first-time renting an RV in Brent is genuinely easier than people expect. Every RVezy host gives a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, awning, propane, water tanks, and the all-important sewage hose. They'll answer questions and often share their personal cell so you can text mid-trip. RVezy's included roadside assistance has your back for tire, battery, or lockout issues. Many Brent-area hosts even include cheat-sheets or short videos. Pro tip: ask your host about driving Highway 5 south toward Payne Lake (it's a calm, scenic warm-up route) before tackling Interstate 20/59 toward Birmingham or Tuscaloosa.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my RV breaks down on the road near Brent?
You won't be stranded. Every RV rental in Brent, AL booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so one call gets help dispatched for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, or mechanical trouble, whether you're on Highway 82 near Centreville or deep in the Talladega National Forest. Cell service is reliable on the main highways around Brent, though it can get spotty on backroads near Payne Lake, so screenshot directions before you head into the woods. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone contacts before pickup so help is one tap away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Brent RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most Brent rentals, which is great because you're within easy reach of Mississippi (about 90 miles west), Tennessee (about 230 miles north), Georgia (around 180 miles east), and Florida's Gulf Coast (about 240 miles south). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, so message the host through the listing before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage stops at the border. Pro tip: a popular RV road trip from Brent is the loop down to Gulf Shores, over to New Orleans, and back through Mobile, which can be done comfortably in 7 to 10 days.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas costs should I plan for around Brent?
Plan smart and your fuel budget stays reasonable. Class C motorhomes around Brent typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs 6 to 10, campervans 14 to 20, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg combined). Alabama gas prices typically run lower than the national average, and stations along U.S. Highway 82 in Centreville and Interstate 20/59 toward Tuscaloosa are convenient fill-up points. Diesel pumps for larger rigs are easy to find at truck stops near Cottondale. Pro tip: drive 60 to 62 mph on the highway instead of 70, and you'll squeeze noticeably more miles out of every tank on your Brent RV trip.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Brent?
For peace of mind, book 2 to 4 months ahead for spring and fall weekends, and as far as 6 months ahead for holiday weekends like Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. U.S. Forest Service sites at Payne Lake Recreation Area and Corps of Engineers sites in the area are reserved through Recreation.gov, which opens bookings up to 6 months in advance. Alabama State Parks (including Lake Lurleen) are reserved through alapark.com. Midweek and winter dates are often walk-up friendly. Pro tip: if your dates are locked, set a Recreation.gov alert for cancellations, since Payne Lake and Lake Lurleen waterfront sites flip open frequently in the two weeks before a weekend.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Brent, AL?
Driving around Brent is mostly relaxed and RV-friendly. U.S. Highway 82 (the main east-west route through town) is wide and well maintained, and State Route 5 south toward Payne Lake is scenic with gentle grades, ideal for first-time motorhome drivers. Interstate 20/59 toward Tuscaloosa and Birmingham is busier but flat. Watch for log trucks on the rural highways since this is timber country, and slow down during the frequent summer afternoon thunderstorms that can dump heavy rain quickly. Deer are active at dawn and dusk on backroads near the Talladega National Forest. Pro tip: avoid driving through Tuscaloosa on University of Alabama football Saturdays in the fall, when game-day traffic can add an hour to a 35-mile trip.
dot.state.al.us/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Brent?
You'll find a healthy mix of options. Payne Lake Recreation Area West has electric hookups, water, restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station; the East side is more primitive with vault toilets and water but no electric. Lake Lurleen State Park provides 30/50-amp electric and water at most sites with a central dump station. Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Lake Tuscaloosa offer electric and water hookups at most waterfront sites. Private parks in the Tuscaloosa and Cottondale area generally have full hookups, WiFi, and laundry. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any campground, since rural fill stations between sites are limited.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brent%2C%20AlabamaHow does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy rental in Brent?
It's straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card when you book (no cash exchanged with the host), and a refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup. The deposit amount depends on the rig and is shown on the listing before you confirm. As long as you return the RV in the same condition with the tanks handled per the host's instructions, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick video walkaround at pickup and drop-off, which makes deposit returns smooth and avoids any back-and-forth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there cheap RV rental options in Brent for budget travelers?
Yes, cheap RV rental in Brent is very doable. The most affordable picks are pop-up campers and smaller travel trailers, often $75 to $110 per night, followed by older Class C motorhomes around $140 to $170. Sort the search by price low-to-high, filter for Instant Book, and consider midweek dates (Sunday through Thursday), which can be 20 to 30 percent cheaper than weekends. Booking three or more nights often unlocks a weekly discount set by the host. Camping at U.S. Forest Service sites like Payne Lake Recreation Area East (around $15 to $20 per night) keeps overall costs low too. Pro tip: shoulder seasons in March and October combine low nightly rates with the best weather of the year in central Alabama.
