Campgrounds and RV parks near Camden, AL

Water recreation drives most trips. The Dannelly Reservoir at Roland Cooper State Park is well known for bass and crappie fishing, and the park provides boat launching facilities. Paul M Grist State Park has a 100-acre lake with a swimming beach, paddle boat rentals, and shoreline fishing. Hiking and wildlife watching are strong across the region. Roland Cooper, Paul M Grist, and Chickasaw are all featured stops on Alabama's Black Belt Birding Trail, with raptors, waterfowl, songbirds, wild turkey, and white-tailed deer commonly seen. Roland Cooper is also a designated dark-sky site with a Bortle Class 2 rating, useful for meteor showers and stargazing. Off-park, Gee's Bend and its quilters' collective, Black Belt Treasures in Camden, and Selma's civil rights sites are the main cultural stops.

Spring and fall are the practical windows for RV travel in this part of Alabama. Daytime highs are comfortable, humidity is lower, and migrating songbirds and waterfowl move through the Black Belt corridor. Wildflower bloom and fishing pressure both peak in April and May. Summer is hot and humid, with July and August highs regularly in the low 90s and heat index values well above 100. Sites remain open year-round at the state parks, but RVers typically want strong A/C, shaded pads, and early-morning activity plans. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winters are mild but wet. Highs sit in the upper 50s, with occasional freezes and only rare light snow between December and March. This is the least crowded season. Hunting seasons overlap with fall and winter, so travelers staying near Chickasaw and adjacent wildlife management areas should check current dates with Alabama's Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries before booking.

Expect small, quiet campgrounds rather than resort-style parks. Roland Cooper has the most infrastructure in the area, with roughly 40 improved RV sites offering water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric on paved pads, bathhouses with hot showers, a dump station, and 14 primitive tent sites. Paul M Grist offers 11 lakeside sites with full hookups and 50-amp service, plus primitive sites and a swimming beach. Chickasaw is the most rustic of the three, with only three RV sites on water and 30-amp electric, restrooms but no showers, and no sewer hookups. Cell coverage is spotty in rural Wilcox and Marengo counties. Bring insect repellent; ticks, mosquitoes, and snakes are all present in warmer months.
