Clayton camping overview
Clayton sits in Barbour County in southeast Alabama's Wiregrass region, within easy driving distance of Lake Eufaula and the Chattahoochee River. Most RV travelers use Clayton as a base for lake recreation, fishing, and visits to the historic town of Eufaula, which lies about a half hour north.
Blue Springs State Park is the closest state-park campground and centers on a cool underground spring that feeds a swimming pool complex. Lakepoint State Park, on the shore of Lake Eufaula, offers the largest developed campground in the area with full-hookup and water-electric sites. Lake Eufaula Campgrounds and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks along the reservoir add lakefront alternatives on both the Alabama and Georgia sides.
Closer to town and off-lake, Backwater RV Park serves travelers who want a straightforward RV stop, and Ozark / Fort Rucker KOA Journey provides a franchised option to the southwest near Fort Novosel. Together these campgrounds cover the range from primitive tent sites to full-hookup pull-throughs.
Things to do near Clayton
Fishing is the region's headline activity. Lake Eufaula covers 45,000 acres and is widely known as the Bass Capital of the World, with anglers targeting largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish, and bream from the fishing pier and boats. Boat ramps, marinas, and bank-fishing spots are scattered around the shoreline on both the Alabama and Georgia sides.
Blue Springs State Park draws swimmers to its spring-fed pools, which are fed by a crystal-clear underground spring that stays at 68 degrees year-round and pumps 3,600 gallons of water per minute into two octagonal sandy-bottomed pools. Lakepoint adds a marina, tennis, and an 18-hole golf course.
For wildlife, the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge sits at the north end of the lake and is a strong stop for birding, especially during winter waterfowl migration.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Clayton. Daytime highs sit in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and campgrounds are less crowded than in peak summer. Spring brings bass-tournament traffic to Lake Eufaula, so lakefront sites at Lakepoint State Park and the Corps campgrounds book up early on weekends.
Summer is hot and humid in the Wiregrass region, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Blue Springs State Park is a popular place to cool off thanks to its constant 68-degree spring pools. Expect strong demand for shaded sites and any campground with water access from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Fall cools gradually and pairs well with wildlife viewing at the Eufaula refuge. Winter is mild but wet, with occasional overnight freezes. Some Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Walter F. George Lake operate seasonally, so verify open dates before booking off-season trips.
How to book campgrounds near Clayton
Alabama State Parks, including Blue Springs and Lakepoint, use the alapark.com reservation system. Out-of-state guests can book up to 12 months in advance, and Alabama residents can book up to 13 months ahead through the Alabama Residents Advanced Reservation Window. Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Lake Eufaula, such as Hardridge Creek, Bluff Creek, White Oak Creek, and Cotton Hill, are booked through Recreation.gov, typically up to six months in advance.
