Camping near Coker, Alabama
Coker sits in Tuscaloosa County in west-central Alabama, a few miles northwest of the city of Tuscaloosa. The area gives RV travelers quick access to the Black Warrior River corridor, University of Alabama attractions, and a cluster of state and university-run camping options within a short drive.
Close-in private options include Mount Olive RV Park, Coaches Corner RV Park, and Bama RV Station, all oriented toward RV travelers looking for hookups near town and the interstate. For a more park-style stay, Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park lies east toward McCalla and offers a large wooded campground on a historic ironworks site. Moundville Archaeological Park Univ of Alabama, south of Tuscaloosa along the Black Warrior River, is run by the University of Alabama and combines camping with access to one of the most significant Mississippian-era mound complexes in North America.
Together these campgrounds cover a range of needs, from quick overnight hookups to multi-day family stays built around history, hiking, and river access.
Things to do around Coker
History drives much of the itinerary here. Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park preserves 19th-century furnace stacks, a working pioneer farm, the Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama, and craft cabins, plus hiking trails along Roupes Creek and a seasonal narrow-gauge train. Moundville Archaeological Park Univ of Alabama surrounds visitors with preserved earthen mounds, a Native American museum with excavation exhibits, and walking paths overlooking the Black Warrior River.
In Tuscaloosa itself, families can pair camping with University of Alabama campus tours, the Paul W. Bryant Museum, the Alabama Museum of Natural History, and riverwalk paths. Anglers and paddlers use the Black Warrior River and nearby lakes, and cyclists find flat, low-traffic routes on rural county roads west of the city.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs generally in the 70s Fahrenheit, lower humidity than midsummer, and the lowest odds of severe heat. Spring, especially March through early May, is also a wet stretch, with strong thunderstorms and occasional severe weather across west Alabama.
Summer brings consistent heat in the 90s with high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. Shaded, wooded campgrounds like Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park are noticeably more comfortable than open, sun-exposed sites during this stretch. Weekends around University of Alabama home football games in the fall fill area campgrounds quickly.
Winters are generally mild but variable. Some services scale back: the Moundville campground bathhouse is closed annually from December 1 through March 1, and only RV camping is allowed during that window.

Reservation rules vary sharply by campground, so it helps to know the system before arrival. Sites can fill during special events such as Trade Days and Halloween weekends, so early arrival is recommended.

What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of wooded state-park camping and small, road-oriented RV parks. Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park offers close to 200 improved sites with water and electricity across several loops, plus a separate primitive tent area, bathhouses, and dump stations. Sites are largely dirt and gravel under tree cover, and the campground can handle both smaller trailers and larger rigs.
Moundville Archaeological Park Univ of Alabama is smaller, with 34 campsites: 5 with electric, water, and sewer hookups, 24 with electric and water, and 5 primitive sites. Sites are gravel and level, with picnic tables and fire rings, and quiet time runs from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near Coker and Tuscaloosa, thinner in wooded state-park interiors. Bring insect repellent from late spring through early fall, and expect train noise near some sites at Moundville.
