Campgrounds near Columbia, Alabama
Columbia sits in Houston County in the southeast corner of Alabama, along the Chattahoochee River across from Georgia. The park sits along the Chattahoochee River, making it accessible for visitors from both states, close to the Alabama-Georgia state line. RV travelers use the town as a base for river access, county parks, and state historic sites within a short drive on either side of the river.
Omussee Creek RV Park is the closest option, operated by Houston County on the river bank. The park includes hiking trails, a volleyball court, two boat ramps, two softball/baseball fields, and picnic areas, with camping and two pavilions available for a fee. Rosemont RV Park, Todd Farms RV Park, and A Okay RV Park round out the private options within a short drive of town.
Across the state line in Early County, Georgia, Kolomoki Mounds Historic Park offers a state-run campground on a wooded lakeshore. The Kolomoki Mounds is one of the largest and earliest Woodland period earthwork mound complexes in the Southeastern United States, constructed near the Chattahoochee River in present-day Early County, and the mounds were designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
Things to do near Columbia
The Chattahoochee River is the main draw. Omussee Creek RV Park has two boat ramps for launching fishing boats and kayaks, plus hiking trails, picnic areas, and ball fields on site. Amenities include a volleyball court, basketball court, two softball/baseball fields, hiking and nature trails, and a boat launch, and no firearms or ATVs are allowed at the park.
At Kolomoki Mounds Historic Park, families can tour the ancient mound complex and use the two on-site lakes. Two lakes provide fishing and boating, and a campground is nestled under hardwoods and pines, with three scenic hiking trails, including the Spruce Pine Trail that offers views of lakes Yohola and Kolomoki, and children will enjoy the playground, pedal boats and miniature golf.
Rosemont RV Park, Todd Farms RV Park, and A Okay RV Park suit longer stays for guests visiting Dothan or crossing into Georgia and Florida.

Spring and fall are the practical windows for RV travel. Daytime highs stay warm without the peak humidity of midsummer, and nights are comfortable for tent-side cooking. The most comfortable overall weather for exploring the area is usually found in October, while May tends to be the driest month.
Summer brings long, hot days with regular afternoon thunderstorms rolling off the Gulf. The region has a humid subtropical climate without a dry season, with moist air currents from the Gulf of Mexico causing substantial humidity and rainfall. Hookup sites with 30 or 50 amp service are worth booking for air-conditioning loads in June, July, and August. Hurricane and tropical-storm remnants can affect the region from late summer into fall, so travelers should track National Hurricane Center forecasts when planning trips in August through October.
Winter is mild but wet. December is the wettest month, with an average of 187 mm of precipitation across 10 rainy days, while May is the driest month, totaling 78 mm over 8 rainy days. Freezes are brief, and most nearby campgrounds stay open year-round.
How to book a campsite
Omussee Creek RV Park is managed by Houston County. Sites are reserved directly with the county parks office by phone rather than through an online portal, so travelers should call ahead to confirm availability, hookup type, and length limits before towing in. The park lists a phone number of 334-696-4626 in Columbia, AL 36319.
Kolomoki Mounds Historic Park uses the Georgia State Parks reservation system. Reservations for this campground are handled through the ReserveAmerica reservation site. Overnight guests pay the daily ParkPass fee only once per vehicle during their stay regardless of duration, and parking is not included with reservation.
Rosemont RV Park, Todd Farms RV Park, and A Okay RV Park are private and generally take bookings by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on arrival
Columbia is a small river town, so expect rural roads and limited overnight retail. Fuel, groceries, and RV supplies are easiest to top up in Dothan before heading east. The area sits in Southeastern Alabama, about 28 miles east of Dothan, reached by taking SR 52 east from Dothan roughly 18 miles into Columbia.
Cell coverage can be spotty at Kolomoki Mounds, though a stronger signal is available a few blocks away at the visitor center. Bring a booster or download offline maps before leaving Dothan.
Sites at Omussee Creek include primitive tent spots and RV hookups. No firearms or ATVs are allowed in the park, and visitors should respect the nature and wildlife. Kolomoki Mounds is more developed but still rural, so stock up before the drive.

To score a cheap RV rental in Columbia, book midweek, travel in the shoulder seasons of March or October, and filter by Instant Book for last-minute deals. Pro tip: longer bookings (5+ nights) frequently unlock weekly discounts set by the host, perfect for a slow exploration of the Chattahoochee River and Florida Panhandle just an hour south.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Columbia%2C%20AlabamaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Columbia, Alabama?
Great news: a regular Alabama driver's license (or any valid U.S./international license) is all you need to rent an RV in Columbia. The state does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or trailers, no matter the size. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified quickly through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Yes, every RVezy booking in Columbia comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location and are clearly listed on the booking page. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on the search page, and message the host to confirm setup at your specific campground, it turns your Columbia RV trip into a true turn-key vacation.

houstoncountyal.gov/213/Parks-RecreationWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Columbia?
Columbia, AL sits in a warm, humid subtropical climate, so the sweet spot for RV camping is mid-March through May and again from late September through early November, when daytime highs hover in the comfortable 70s and 80s and humidity drops. Summers (June to August) bring 90F+ days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, great if you are heading straight to Gulf beaches, but tough for sitting around a campsite. Winters are mild (50s by day, 30s by night), making December to February surprisingly pleasant for snowbird-style trips. Pro tip: October brings the National Peanut Festival in nearby Dothan, plan your Columbia RV trip around it for serious small-town Southern charm.
weather.gov/tae/I've never rented an RV before, is Columbia a good place to start?
Columbia is genuinely one of the easier places in Alabama for a first time renting an RV. Traffic is light, roads are flat and straight, and you're surrounded by uncrowded campgrounds like Omussee Creek where you can practice leveling and hookups without an audience. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and waste tanks, so you're never left guessing. You can also message the host any time during your trip. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer (under 25 feet) for your first booking, they drive much more like a large van and are forgiving on Houston County's rural two-lane roads.
fmcsa.dot.gov/ourroads/large-vehicles-share-roadWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Columbia RV trip?
You are covered, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is just a phone call away whether you are parked along the Chattahoochee or heading down US-231 toward Panama City. The service handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues, and the dispatch team can find providers familiar with RVs in rural southeast Alabama. Your host is also a direct message away through the RVezy app for quick questions like generator quirks or slide-out troubleshooting. Pro tip: snap a photo of your exact location or drop a pin in Google Maps before you call, cell service can get spotty on the back roads between Columbia and Abbeville, and pinpointing your spot speeds everything up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Columbia RV rental across state lines to Florida or Georgia?
Yes, interstate travel is one of the best perks of an RV road trip from Columbia, AL, you are minutes from both the Georgia and Florida state lines. The Chattahoochee River forms the Georgia border just east of town, and Florida is only about 25 miles south. Popular destinations include Panama City Beach (about 90 miles), St. George Island (about 130 miles), and Lake Seminole (about 30 miles). Travel within the U.S. is fully covered under your RVezy protection plan. Important: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: message the host before booking if you are planning a longer multi-state loop, they may have route tips and favorite stops to share.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my Alabama RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest cost after the rental itself, so it's smart to plan ahead. Class C motorhomes around Columbia average 8 to 12 MPG, Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG). Alabama gas prices tend to run below the national average, often $2.80 to $3.20 per gallon, and diesel is widely available at Pilot and Love's along US-231 in Dothan. For a 300-mile round trip to Panama City Beach and back in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: use the GasBuddy app, the truck stops in Dothan almost always beat Columbia's small-town pumps by 20+ cents.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Columbia?
For most of the year, you can snag a site at Omussee Creek Park or River Oaks RV Park with just a week's notice, Columbia's rural setting means campgrounds rarely sell out months ahead like coastal Florida parks do. However, holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) and the October Peanut Festival weekend in Dothan fill 4 to 6 weeks out. Alabama State Parks like Blue Springs use ReserveAmerica and open bookings up to 12 months in advance for peak dates. Pro tip: if you're planning a spring break trip down to the Gulf, book your Florida campgrounds first (those sell out 3 to 6 months ahead), then arrange your Columbia RV rental once your route is locked in.
alapark.com/parks/blue-springs-state-parkWhat are driving conditions like around Columbia, AL?
Driving an RV in and around Columbia is refreshingly easy, this is small-town Alabama with flat terrain, wide rural highways, and minimal traffic. US-231 is the main north-south corridor (Dothan to Panama City), and AL-95 takes you toward the Chattahoochee River. Watch for occasional low-hanging branches on county roads, agricultural equipment during peanut and cotton harvest (September to November), and afternoon summer thunderstorms that can drop heavy rain fast. There are no mountains, tunnels, or low bridges to stress over. Pro tip: avoid driving during severe weather watches and pull off at a sturdy rest area or truck stop until storms pass.
